2011-12 hockey preview day one by myself. I havent been called upon to do that before. But at the same time, I feel like Ive played well for this team. Especially in crucial situations Ive played my best hockey. The team knows that I can get the job done. And, two seasons in the making, there should be a good dynamic between myself and the defense. If anything was to occur necessitating Janecyks promotion, for a game, a weekend series, or longer, the Wolverines have confidence the Ada, Mich., native, a veteran of a single game, can flourish. We can look at the situation that Hunwick came into we had no idea what to expect. We all invested in him, and he rewarded us, senior defenseman Greg Pateryn said. If something does happen, were not going to take any steps back with Adam Janecyk in net. The Maize and Blue are expecting Hunwick to capitalize on his largest opportunity yet, though, believing he can take them one step further than he did a year ago, to the 2012 national championship. Every guy on this team trusts him, believes in him, and knows he can backstop this team to the NCAA title because he did it last year, senior forward David Wohlberg said. He was the reason we made it to the finals. There were a couple games in the postseason we didnt play our best in front of him, but he played his best, and we won. I dont think there is more pressure on him now that hes our No. 1 goalie. He knows its his job, and he doesnt have to look over his shoulder wondering if every mistake he makes will cost him a start. He can just play his game, and we can play our game knowing he has our back. If we want to reach our goals, Hunwick has to carry the burden in net. He knows that, and hes really excited to be the guy. ichigan Goalies In CCHA M And NCAA Tournament Play Turco went 9-2 in NCAA play, leading Michigan to national championships in 1996 and 1998. photo courtesy u-m sports information Hunwick Is Michigans Best Postseason Goalie Since Marty Turco Marty Turco (1995-98) is considered the best Michigan goaltender in program history, and certainly his success in the postseason would support such a claim. The backstop for U-Ms 1996 and 1998 national championship teams, Turco went 9-2 in NCAA play (.818), posting a 2.27 goals-against average. In the CCHA playoffs, he won 80.0 percent of his games, going 12-3 with a 1.93 goals-against average in leading the Maize and Blue to tournament titles in 1996 and 1997. Since Turcos departure, six different goaltenders have started in net for the Wolverines during the postseason. Among these netminders, fifthyear senior Shawn Hunwick boasts the highest overall winning percentage in NCAA contests (.667) and in postseason games (.813). What impresses me about Shawn Hunwick is he plays bigger in bigger games, head coach Red Berenson said. As a coach, as a forward, as a defenseman, you want to know that when the games matter more you dont have to worry about whos behind you in net. In two postseason opportunities, Shawn Hunwick has been as good as you could ask a goalie to be. Here is a look at how the goalies since Turco compare in CCHA and NCAA Tournament starting assignments, and during the playoffs overall.
