2011-12 hockey preview tough year. He didnt get to play as many games as he probably would have liked, but I think he took advantage of his practices. Already early on here, as far as conditioning, how he looks and his presence, you can tell that hes ready to make an impact. Last year was a year he took some positives out of it and also there were some frustrations, and I know hes looking forward to starting from scratch. Honors & Awards: None. Assistant coach Billy Powers: We were a senior-laden team a year ago and opportunity was not great, but Derek showed flashes good tenacity, really, really good hockey sense. Derek knew that this was a huge spring and summer because strength was an issue, and hes come back, he looks great, so now hopefully it will translate. Hes a kid that, based on role changing and opportunity changing, we could see a take huge jump from a year ago. Honors & Awards: None. Draft Status: Free Agent. He got better over the summer, too. It will be easier for him this year, getting more reps in practice and seeing more shots. The kid works his tail off. Hes very capable, and if we need him, hell be ready to play. Hes not as athletic as Hunwick, but few goalies are. Hes more of a technically sound goalie. Honors & Awards: Earned the University of Michigan Athletic Academic Achievement award in 2010-11. Draft Status: Free Agent.
