2011-12 hockey preview hell play, but the last three years have taught us you never know what can happen. Honors & Awards: Was a four-year starter for the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats from 2006-10 Posted a .900 save percentage in leading the River Rats to their first regional championship in 20 years, and was named Washtenaw Country Player of the Year and earned All-Southeastern Conference Red Division honors in 2009-10 Posted an .890 save percentage and earned allstate, All SEC-Red and All-Metro honors in 2008-09. Draft Status: Free Agent. F Alex Guptill 6-3 180 Newmarket, Ont. Assistant coach Brian Wiseman: Guptills a scorer, playmaker, offensive threat, a big body. For a team that needs guys to step up as far as offense goes, were really hoping Alex can translate the things he showed in junior to Michigan right away. Hes a year older, 19 years old, so he should be able to hit the ground running. Hes got high-end offensive ability. Honors & Awards: Scored 13 goals and added 12 assists totaling 25 points in 43 games with the Waterloo Black Hawks in 2010-11 Skated with both the Orangeville Crushers and Brampton Capitals in 2009-10, notching 37 points on 19 goals and 18 assists in 29 games Played 49 games with Brampton in 2008-09, with 30 goals and 34 assists totaling 64 points. Draft Status: A third-round selection (No. 77 overall) of the Dallas Stars in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. F Zach Hyman 6-2 195 Toronto, Ont. Assistant coach Brian Wiseman: Zach Hyman is a highly regarded Canadian junior Player of the Year, and a very hard-nosed, honest hockey player with a great skill set. Were expecting Zach to fit in nicely with the program right away. Honors & Awards: Played for the Hamilton Red Wings from 2008-11 64 the wolverine October 2011 Played in 160 games and racked up 102 goals and 140 assists totaling 242 points Named Canadian Junior A player of the year in 2010-11 Earned the B.J. Munro Memorial Award as Ontario Hockey Associations Top Professional Prospect, joining Mike Cammalleri as the only Michigan players to receive the honor. Draft Status: A fifth-round selection (No. 123 overall) of the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. F Travis Lynch 5-11 176 White Lake, Mich. Assistant coach Billy Powers: Travis was one of the better players in the U.S. Hockey League last year, scoring over 20 goals, and hes always been known as a high-end penalty, an honest centerman. He really blossomed offensively in his second year in that league, so were thinking he can add a little bit of everything. His foundation is as a gritty, intelligent center, but hell contribute offensively too. Honors & Awards: Skated with the Green Bay Gamblers from 2009-11 Appeared in 118 career games and registered 66 points on 26 goals and 40 assists. Draft Status: Free Agent. D Brennan Serville 6-2 184 Pickering, Ont. Assistant coach Billy Powers: Kind of a late-blooming defenseman out of Ontario, he had a very successful second year of junior hockey. What really stands out is his agility and mobility. Hes a real smooth-skating defenseman, makes good puck decisions, gets the puck to the forwards at the right times. As his career progresses and we add strength and confidence to him, hes going to be a dynamic defenseman at Michigan. Honors & Awards: Skated with the Stouffville Spirit from 2009-11 Tallied eight goals and 49 assists totaling 57 points in 98 career games. Draft Status: A third-round selection (No. 78 overall) of the Winnipeg Jets in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. F Andrew Sinelli 5-9 168 Dexter, Mich. Assistant coach Billy Powers: Hes an energy-type forward. He was the top penalty killer in the U.S. Hockey League. He plays with great pace. Tenacious. Hes a guy that, if anybody lapses, hell steal their spot and may not ever lose it. Hes a guy thats going to push for ice time from the beginning. Honors & Awards: Skated with the Youngstown Phantoms and Dubuque Fighting Saints in 2010-11 Collected six goals and three assists totaling nine points in 45 games Played for the Sioux City Musketeers in 2009-10 Appeared in 50 games, with six goals and 11 assists totaling 17 points. Draft Status: Free Agent. D Mike Szuma 6-0 195 Novi, Mich. Assistant coach Billy Powers: Michael Szuma is a local Michigan kid that played in the North American Hockey League a year ago. We had tracked him a year prior when he was going through U.S. Hockey League tryouts and really liked the player. Hes kind of a nondescript player because hes good at everything and doesnt really stand out in one area. A real solid performer, trustworthy, had a really nice year in junior hockey last year for the Michigan Warriors, a new team in the North American League, so he was a prominent performer in that league. Hes definitely going to push guys for minutes early. Honors & Awards: Played with the Michigan Warriors in 2010-11 Appeared in 56 games, with seven goals and 15 assists totaling 22 points Skated with the Green Mountain Glades in 2009-10 Collected nine points on four goals and five assists in 43 games. Draft Status: Free Agent. A subscription to THEWOLVERINE is a terrific gift idea. Call toll free 1-800-421-7751
