PROJECTED U-M DEPTH CHART OFFENSIVE POSITION BATTLES TO WATCH: LEFT TACKLE AND RIGHT GUARD Most know the left tackle position is up for grabs, with fifth-year senior Juwann Bushell-Beatty battling redshirt freshman James Hudson for the job. Redshirt ju- nior Jon Runyan Jr., too, is working there and could win the job. But right guard is a battle, as well, and junior Michael Onwenu — a nine-game starter a year ago — has his hands full. Head coach Jim Harbaugh called it a tight race during Big Ten Media Days July 22 and 23, noting redshirt sophomore Ste- phen Spanellis was right in the mix. Spanellis impressed at times last year and played significantly in the Outback Bowl at center. "Spanellis has an excellent grasp of the playbook and is at the point where he's asking intricate questions about the offense," junior left guard Ben Bredeson said. "He always has to know why something is happening. Onwenu is progressing the same way, too." Onwenu might still be the favorite, but it's not by much. DEFENSIVE POSITION BATTLE TO WATCH: WEAKSIDE LINEBACKER Defensive coordinator Don Brown said Aug. 8 he felt weakside linebacker was a two-man race between sophomore Josh Ross and redshirt sophomore Devin Gil, with redshirt freshman Drew Singleton pushing both. Junior left guard Ben Bredeson had nothing but praise for Gil when he met the media Aug. 10. "Devin Gil, he's making great strides," Bredeson said about the position. Junior middle linebacker Devin Bush Jr. agreed. "Devin has improved from spring — he had a really good spring and now he's having a really good fall," Bush said. "He's just got to keep his arrow going up and keep his focus." Ross is playing both middle and weakside linebacker, and he's been good as well. He'll be the first backup at both if he doesn't win the job. Singleton has great days, Bush said, but needs to be more consistent in order to win the job. Junior Micheal Onwenu, who started nine games last season at right gurad, is competing with redshirt sophomore Stephen Spanellis to be in the opening lineup this fall. PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
