SEPTEMBER 2018 THE WOLVERINE 63 BY AUSTIN FOX M ichigan's Olympic sports teams annually attract elite talent to Ann Arbor, and this year 's freshman crop is no different. Some of the best recruits in the na‑ tion have signed up to play for the Maize and Blue. The following is The Wolverine's ranking of the 10 best in‑ coming recruits in this year's cycle: 1. MASON PARRIS Lawrenceburg, Ind. • Wrestling The Indiana native is ranked No. 1 nationally at 220 pounds and is the No. 3 overall recruit in the country ac‑ cording to FloWrestling. InterMat listed him at No. 4 overall in the class of 2018. Parris racked up a 206‑1 career record in high school, compiling a 152‑0 tally as a junior and senior. He won three straight Indiana state titles at 220 pounds (2016‑18), while taking third place at 182 pounds as a fresh‑ man in 2015. "I spent some time with Mason this summer, and he's like a sponge — he's so excited to learn and develop," head coach Sean Bormet said. "He's also a three‑sport athlete, so his time to train and develop in wrestling has been limited. Mason has a good drive and an eagerness to learn — that's what I'm most excited about." 2. STEVEN FORMAN Troy, Mich. • Tennis Tennis Recruiting Network had quite the praise for Forman, rating him No. 2 nationally and tabbing him as a five‑star, blue‑chip prospect in their Aug. 7 rankings. Michigan's Mr. Tennis as a senior took home the 2016 and 2017 No. 1 Michigan state singles title for Troy High School, and was honored as the MLive Detroit Boys Tennis Player of the Year both seasons. He never sur‑ rendered more than a point in a set in the championship bracket in his final prep campaign. "He's a local kid from Troy, and we're always excited to get the top players from Michigan," head coach Adam Steinberg noted. "In the last three or four months, he's really made a jump on the court. Steven is a big kid who is a lefty, and every time I watch him play, I see something better and better in him."   TOP TEN OLYMPIC SPORTS FRESHMEN THE BEST OF THE BEST Michigan Hauls In A New Crop Of Elite Prospects Freshman heavyweight Mason Parris (right) hopes to follow in the footsteps of recent gradu- ate Adam Coon (left), a two-time NCAA runner-up who will represent the U.S. in the Greco- Roman World Championships this October.
