enn State has raised millions of dol-
lars in recent years to remake the
aging Lasch Building into a sleek
and shiny edifice befitting one of the na-
tion's more forward-looking football
programs. The Nittany Lions have redone
their locker room, weight room, lobby
and auditorium, and are in the process of
remaking their team meeting rooms into
the kind of spaces that, if the rest of the
building is any indication, would make
James Franklin
and James T. Kirk feel
right at home.
But the addition that Franklin seemed
to be most excited about at the Nittany
Lions' football media day was not a piece
of eye-catching decor imported from the
future.
It was a goal post.
Penn State recently bought an arena
football goal post and installed it at the far
end of a renovated outdoor practice field.
Why use a piece of indoor equipment on
an outdoor field? Because it's very small.
An arena crossbar measures only 9 feet
across and sits 15 feet above the field,
whereas a regulation college goal post has
an 18½-foot crossbar that sits 10 feet off
the field.
