Angling to start at the weakside linebacker spot opposite the Sam, the po- sition at which he started 13 games in 2017, Farmer is the most experienced player in that group. Unless, of course, Manny Bowen makes a full return following his dismissal from the team late last season. After an un- specified violation of team rules, Bowen needed to live up to a series of stipula- tions laid out by the coaching staff in order to be reinstated. As Franklin and defensive coordinator Brent Pry ex- plained, Bowen met those stipulations. But while he is practicing again, Bowen is not necessarily guaranteed an immedi- ate or even an eventual return to the field. Franklin said at media day that he had "no idea" what Bowen's role will be with the team this season. Jake Cooper and Jarvis Miller are re- turning veterans with somewhat limited experience, fighting to make an impact. Dae'Lun Darien is a redshirt sophomore making the switch from wide receiver, where he spent his first two seasons at Penn State. The room gets very youthful from there. Ellis Brooks and Brelin Faison-Walden both redshirted last season. Micah Par- sons, a Rivals.com five-star player and the No. 6 overall prospect in the Class of 2018, was a January enrollee. Jesse Luketa likewise arrived for the start of the spring semester, and Charlie Katshir joined the others this summer. From this group, Franklin and Pry have an intrigu- ing series of choices. "You would never know [Parsons] has never played linebacker before," Franklin said. "He can find the ball. He's got a natural ability. He'll go run through the wrong gap and backdoor the play, but he can find the ball. Now we have to get him more consistent in terms of getting in the right gap and leverage and those types of things, but he can naturally find the ball.
