topics about the Notre Dame football program centered on what
direction the quarterback position
would take, who could aid the ravaged
cornerback spots and how head coach
Brian Kelly would fare in the always
pivotal third season.
Those questions were answered
quite satisfactorily. Now, here are five
of the prime topics, so far, when looking
ahead to 2013.
1. Feeding The Monster
Congratulations, Brian Kelly, you are
now officially the head football coach at
Notre Dame.
Our definition of that has been, "You
aren't the coach at Notre Dame until
10-2 or even 11-1 suddenly is perceived
as a letdown or disappointment."
Prior to taking the Notre Dame job in
1986, Lou Holtz said former head coach
Ara Parseghian (1964‑74) warned him
the job becomes more draining once
you've reached the summit.
After winning the national title in
year three, Holtz said the outside criticism intensified: Why didn't you win
by more? Why are you misusing Rick
Mirer and Ron Powlus? How come
you can't keep your staff in place? Why
do you play such soft coverage and not
blitz more? Why don't you throw to
the tight end? Why are you wasting all
Senior Chris Watt has started every game at left
guard the past two seasons, but the Irish might
need his help at center to help fortify the offensive
line next year.
