Hoak's Penn State legacy is continuing with grandson Michael Shuster, who is a redshirt sophomore quarterback on the 2018 team. Saul was a late-bloomer at Penn State. He never started at center-linebacker in his three years because of classmate Jay Huffman, but to get Saul on the field more often, the coaches occasionally used him at end. In his senior year of 1961, he played linebacker with the first unit and center with the second platoon. Saul was so impressive in his linebacker role that the Baltimore Colts made him their second draft choice (23rd overall). Yet the Colts used him mostly as a re- serve with limited playing time, and be- fore the 1964 season he joined the Steelers in a trade. For the next three years, Saul started in all but five of Pittsburgh's 42 games, mostly at middle linebacker calling de- fensive signals, and on Dec. 7, 1967, he earned his obscure niche in NFL history. In the next-to-last game of the season against Washington, NFL Films outfit- ted a player with a wireless microphone for the first time, and Saul was that man.
