T H E M O N T H I N . . . O P I N I O N S How good are the Nittany Lions? We don't know yet. They still won't be fa- vored to beat Ohio State, even at Beaver Stadium, in their next big test following games with Kent State and a trip to Illi- nois. NEIL RUDEL ALTOONA MIRROR There's a whole bunch of stuff that's on that [Kent State] tape that's ugly and smells bad, and winning sometimes is like the deodorant that covers it up – the funk, perfume, cologne, whatever you want to spray over it, but that's the win. It doesn't mean that you still can't correct the issues and the problems, be- cause they're there. JAMES FRANKLIN Having given his time, e/ort and en- ergy to not only the Penn State football program, but also to a variety of chari- table causes, .1h-year senior o/en- sive lineman Charlie Shuman had the favor repaid recently. In front of Maiya Colon, the inspira- tion for Shuman's foundation, Big Helping Little, as well as her family, his parents and the rest of the Nittany Lion football family, Shuman was awarded a full scholarship for his .nal season at Penn State. According to a story in The Daily Collegian, Colon caught Shuman's at- tention as a 2-year-old battling a ge- netic abnormality called progressive osseous heteroplasia, which causes bone to form in skin and muscle tissue. "It has already forced Maiya and her family to deal with di0culties such as emergency surgeries, internal infec- tions and organ failure," Shuman said. "And because of the extreme rarity of the condition, which is poorly under- stood, Maiya's family has had to make trips to Philadelphia from their home near Rochester, N.Y. , to see pediatric experts – trips which take a heavy .- nancial toll on the family." In the time since his founding of the charity, the Pittsford, N.Y., native has been with the Nittany Lions as a pre- ferred walk-on, .nally making his col- legiate debut in Penn State's win against Georgia State during the 2017 season. He has been a Dean's List student and last year received Academic All- Big Ten recognition. –NATE BAUER Q U O T E S FOOTBALL Shuman earns scholarship as senior
