cavalier sports OCTOBER 2018 5 W hen third-year Virginia striker Erin Sha- nahan first grasped a field hockey stick, she was a second grader in Pasadena, Md. She graduated from Archbishop Spalding having scored 94 goals and assisting on 50 more during her prep career. Evidence of her improvement is under- scored by the fact that she's one of three Cavaliers who were named to the U.S. Women's Field Hockey Development Squad for 2018-19. This past June, she competed in the 2018 USAFH Young Women's Na- tional Championship. A premonition of things to come occurred when she was named to the 2015-16 USA Women's Indoor U-19 National Team and later earned an invitation to the 2017 U-21 Junior National Camp. The 2015 Maryland High School Coaches Scholar-Athlete of the Year, she had Vir- ginia career totals of 12 goals and 11 assists through Sept. 23. My advice to student-athletes is: I would say to make sure you manage your time efficiently. Being a student-athlete you have to multitask off the field and perform on the field as well. The primary challenge facing student- athletes today is: The primary challenge is getting enough sleep, plus finding time to fit in a proper meal. The best thing about UVA is: The com- munity of student-athletes and non-athletes. The community in general is great and very supportive. Why I chose UVA: I chose it because when I came here it felt right, the atmo- sphere and the academics, plus the people I met were great. And I wanted to be part of something special. What I like the most about field hockey: I think for me there's always a new challenge, either in the game or on your own in terms of skills you want to perfect. Plus, the game is always evolving. What I've learned from field hockey: I've learned a bunch of life lessons, like how to deal with teammates and coaches. I've learned a lot of life lessons, which ob- viously can be applied throughout my life. The highlight of my athletic career: Win- ning the ACC championship my first year. My dream vacation would be: Anywhere there are tropical beaches like the Virgin Is- lands and the Turks and Caicos Islands. My post-college ambition is: Being suc- cessful in what career path I follow, plus using all the skills I've used in the sport and being able to apply them — maybe in a career field or coaching later on. — Mike Scandura Shanahan scored one goal and tallied two as- sists in Virginia's first eight games this season. ERNST • CROSS COUNTRY Both the men and women swept their season opener, the UVA Duals at Pan- orama Farms, Sept. 1 — but it's hard to top the performance posted by the men. The third-year Ernst, a native of Marblehead, Mass., led the way for the No. 17 Cavs, who captured each of the top five spots in the race, by clocking a time of 12:05.41, more than five sec- onds ahead of the second-place finisher. In the women's race, the Cavaliers captured five of the top seven places. COLIN SHUTLER • MEN'S SOCCER The redshirt second-year goalie was named the ACC De- fensive Player of the Week twice within the first month of the season, helping the Cavs start 4-0-2. Through six contests, No. 11 UVA had allowed one goal — which came in a 1-1 tie against No. 21 Virginia Tech — and remained one of only seven unbeaten squads nationally. The Cavs' 0.16 goals against av- erage ranked second nationally through Sept. 23, while Shutler led the country in goals against average (0.16) and save percentage (.960). OLAMIDE ZACCHEAUS • FOOTBALL Virginia's Sept. 15 game against Ohio was moved to Nashville, Tenn., due to Hurricane Florence, but the fourth- year wideout made himself at home in the unique situation. He set a school re- cord with 247 receiv- ing yards during the 45-31 win and was later honored as the ACC Receiver of the Week. Through three weeks, it marked the second-most receiving yards by a Football Bowl Subdivision player in a game this season, and it stood 10th in ACC single-game annals.
