10 CAVALIER CORNER By Greg Waters T he UVA Tennis Complex at Boar's Head Sports Club is the next step in the development of the Cavalier's tennis programs. The new facility will create a true home for Virginia Men's and Women's tennis with six competition courts, one ex- hibition court and a pavilion to house locker rooms, coaches' offices, strength and con- ditioning space, a training room, academic space and a nutrition area. "I think what the facility does is that it enhances the student-athlete experience, especially when it comes to tennis players at UVA," director of tennis and head men's tennis coach Andres Pedroso said. "Right now, we're at Snyder and The Boar's Head and depending on weather, we go back and forth, which is something we've managed for a long time. "This facility is really going to give us an opportunity to be in one place. Everything's going to be extremely convenient." Women's head coach Sara O'Leary con- curred that the new complex will help make the team more efficient. "Their time is very valuable, and they have a lot on their plates in terms of aca- demics, tennis, rehab and conditioning. The way it's set up right now is not very effi- cient for the student-athlete," she said. "We recognize they have a lot going on, and we always try and maximize their time. "It takes 10-15 minutes to get from place to place, and when we're in the middle of practice and it starts raining we must pack up the balls and gear and head to Boar's Head. That takes 15-20 minutes and then the players have to warm up again." The impetus of the project was the lead gift committed by the Altec/Styslinger Foundation. The two-level, 10,000-square-foot ten- nis pavilion will be situated adjacent to the McArthur Squash Center and will feature a covered terrace overlooking the entire complex.
