www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 8, 2018 7 UNDER THE DOME PREPARING TWO AS ONE Nevertheless, Kelly has maintained a consistent stance that even though Book might be the new starter, Wim- bush has to prepare each week to be- come the starter just like Book did the first three weeks of the season. It doesn't mean Wimbush is going to switch to running back or receiver, nor does it mean that the duo will be rotating at quarterback during games. "They're both going to prepare the way they have," Kelly said. "It's important that everybody knows that both of these quarterbacks can win football games for us. That's the most important thing. So as coaches, we have to keep both of them sharp. The chal- lenge is making sure that dur- ing the week of our prepara- tion that they're both sharp. "We've got a lot of work to do each and every week to make sure that happens in terms of making sure that they get the right looks in the red zone, short yardage, third- down-and-long and blitz pack- ages. It's a lot of work during the week, but we'll make sure both of them are ready." The Book-Wimbush tandem is not viewed as one that is "inter- changeable," but one with different skill sets that can complement each other. Thus, Kelly believes using two different systems on offense for separate packages would be counter- productive to the operation and not ideally maximizing practice time. It also speaks to the flexibility of the structure. "Our offense allows for both of them to separate quite easy within the playbook," he explained. "What's installed within our offense, we're not going into a whole new chapter and verse to play call for one versus the other. We have to prepare them both, and we like plays for one ver- sus the other, and we'll call the game accordingly, so we have to prepare them accordingly during the week." If needed, the staff will use both in a game without trying to force it, which is why Kelly maintains the right to be flexible at quarterback based on various factors. He also took an approach from the WIN ac- ronym — What's Important Now? — a favorite topic of former Irish head coach Lou Holtz (1986-96). "This season is broken into what's important now," Kelly said. "We don't want to look back. We don't want to look forward. It's in the mo- ment. … If we feel like playing both of them every other series is the best thing to win, we'll do it. "We're not here to please any one group. We're just trying to win games." KEEPING WIMBUSH IN THE LOOP Neither Book nor Wimbush was made available for interviews the week of the Stanford game in an ef- fort to limit distractions that can of- ten occur with quarterback switches. One of the "elephant in the room" issues is to keep Wimbush engaged in practices and preparation, because losing the job as a starting quarter- back, especially after 15 starts, can be tremendously deflating to an indi- vidual. Earlier in the Kelly era, both Malik Zaire (2016) and Dayne Crist (2011) never quite recov- ered after losing their starting jobs for different reasons. It also happened to 2012 and 2014 starter Everett Gol- son. After losing the starting role to Zaire in the 2014 Music City Bowl win versus LSU — although he still was active in the offense by completing six passes for 90 yards on sev- eral scoring drives — Golson opted to become a graduate transfer at Florida State fol- lowing 2015 spring practice. The rise of Book provides a lesson in the necessity to be prepared at all times — and that goes for Wimbush too the rest of this year. "It's the age-old question about engagement," Kelly said. "You have one of two ways to go. I think Ian Book would be a great example … he was engaged. He knew that he was going to contrib- ute and Brandon knows he's going to contribute. "So I think he's got the right makeup, that he'll be engaged and prepared each and every week. I'm not really concerned about that. We will see how each week goes. It's a very fluid situation from week-to- week and we'll make sure that he's prepared to play, just as we did the same thing with Ian." One never knows when his time will come. ✦ Where sophomore quarterback Ian Book has excelled to earn the start- ing job is making quick reads and then getting the ball out of his hands rapidly and accurately to a bevy of targets.
