www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 15, 2018 11 UNDER THE DOME In his second start this season, junior quarter‑ back Ian Book was honored by three different outlets for his performance against Stanford in which he completed 24 of his 33 passes for 278 yards with four touchdowns (to four different targets) and no interceptions, and added 47 rushing yards. Book won the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback of the Week for games played Sept. 27‑29, and became one of just four quar‑ terbacks in the nation to earn Davey O'Brien Great 8 accolades in back‑to‑back weeks in 2018. He also was one of eight quarterbacks placed on "Stars of The Week" for The Manning Award, named after the Archie, Peyton and Eli trio. Finally, Book earned Maxwell Player of the Week honors, named for the Maxwell Award. Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly said Book has created a trickle‑down effect not only on offense, but the entire team. "Whether it's 'escapability,' where he can sense the rush, and that builds a confidence level with your offensive line," Kelly said. "They know that even if they maybe don't sustain a block, they're going to be okay, so I don't have to grab or hold. "Wide receivers knowing that they're going to get the football in a position where they can run after the catch." Putting points on the board — 56 at Wake Forest and 38 at Stanford — also puts pressure on the opposing offense, which then can aid the Irish defense. In the 24‑16 Irish win over Ball State, the Cardinals ran 97 plays. Three weeks later, the Stanford Cardinal ran only 51. "If you're efficient and scoring points on of‑ fense, you're putting other offenses in a pre‑ dicament where they can't just ball control," Kelly added. "… Limiting plays has to do with offensive efficiency." Meanwhile, senior defensive tackle Jerry Til‑ lery also received three honors for his four solo sacks recorded against the Cardinal in the 38‑17 Irish victory: Walter Camp Football Bowl Sub‑ division Defensive Player of the Week, Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of The Week and a spot on the Pro Football Focus Team of the Week. Since 1982, when quarterback sacks were put in their own category from tackles for loss, Til‑ lery's four sacks tied a Notre Dame record last reached by Victor Abiamiri in 2005 — also against Stanford — and future Pro Bowl end Justin Tuck versus the Cardinal in 2003 and Pitt in 2002. Kelly was likewise singled out when officials from the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation and Chick‑fil‑A Peach Bowl selected him as The Dodd Trophy Coach of the Week. The award honors the football coach whose program embodies the award's three pillars of scholarship, leadership and integrity, while also having success on the playing field during the previous week. — Lou Somogyi Holy Cross Village is a continuing care retirement community, sponsored by the Brothers of Holy Cross, with a tradition of caring, compassion and trust.
