www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 29, 2018 15 UNDER THE DOME 75 Years Ago: Oct. 30, 1943 In his final game for No. 1-ranked Notre Dame before having to report to Parris Island, S.C., to take part in advanced Marine training for World War II, Irish quarterback Angelo Bertelli completes 5 of 9 passes for 119 yards with three touchdowns — 49 yards to Jules Rykovich, 52 yards to Creighton Miller and three yards to John Yonakor — and runs for a fourth in a 33-6 rout of No. 3 Navy in Cleveland. 65 Years Ago: Oct. 24, 1953 No. 1 Notre Dame snaps No. 4 Georgia Tech's 31-game unbeaten streak with a 27-14 victory at home. Overshadowing the feat is 45-year-old Fighting Irish head coach Frank Leahy collapsing in the locker room at halftime with an attack of pancreatitis that is so severe that the unconscious head coach is given last rites of the Catholic Church by school vice president Rev. Ned Joyce. Although Leahy would survive the frightening episode, the event would play a role in his resignation at the end of the season. Assistant coaches Joe McArdle and Bill Earley take over the coaching duties in the second half, and the Irish break a 7-7 halftime deadlock on a nine-yard scoring pass from Ralph Guglielmi to Joe Heap, and then Art Hunter recovers an errant Georgia Tech punt snap in the end zone. The final tally comes from halfback Johnny Latter on his 21st birthday. He plunges in from the 1-yard line, while the Irish student body serenades him with "Happy Birthday." 45 Years Ago: Oct. 27, 1973 In one of the most rousing atmospheres ever at Notre Dame Stadium, the No. 8 Fighting Irish improve to 6-0 with a 23-14 triumph in the rain against prime nemesis and reigning national champion USC. The Trojans entered the contest with a 23-game unbeaten streak and a 4-0-2 mark against the Irish in the previous six meetings from 1967-72, creating a popular theory that Notre Dame 10th-year head coach Ara Parseghian "can't win the big one." A campus abuzz in enthusiasm includes hundreds of photos of USC tailback An- thony Davis — who scored six touch- downs, two on kickoff returns, the year before in a 45-23 win over Notre Dame — taped to the sidewalks so the students can trod on them. Quarterback Tom Clements sneaks in for a one-yard touchdown on fourth down right before halftime, and halfback Eric Penick's electrifying 85-yard touchdown run on the first Irish play in the third quar- ter for a 20-7 lead helps propel the victory. Linebacker Greg Collins and freshman safety Luther Bradley headline a defensive effort that forces four turnovers and limits Davis to 55 yards on 19 carries, while Bob Thomas adds three field goals. 30 Years Ago: Oct. 29, 1988 A blasé 22-7 victory by No. 2 Notre Dame versus Navy becomes forgotten when No. 1 UCLA, with Troy Aikman at quarterback, gets upset 34-30 at home by Washington State. That loss by the Bruins elevates the Fighting Irish to the top spot for the first time in seven years. It had been the second-longest drought from the summit, behind the 10 years from Oct. 2, 1954 until Nov. 7, 1964. 25 Years Ago: Oct. 23, 1993 No. 2 Notre Dame defeats USC a record 11th consecutive year, 31-13. Running back Lee Becton romps for a 70-yard touchdown on the game's second play to help build a 28-7 halftime lead. Quarterback Paul Failla, starting in place of the injured Kevin McDougal, attempts only nine passes, completing six for 78 yards, highlighted by a 29-yard score to fullback Ray Zellars. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 20‑31 YOU DON'T WAIT FOR MAIL DELIVERY!
