Fourth-quarter woes continue to vex Penn State
Everything seemed to be going so well
for Penn State in its matchup with Ohio
State last month. Miles Sanders had just
blasted into the end zone for a 1-yard
touchdown, and while the Nittany Lions
weren't able to hit the two-point con-
version attempt that followed, they had
a 12-point lead with eight minutes to go.
With a record crowd of 110,889 doing
everything in its power to help disrupt
any attempt at a comeback, the Lions'
dreams of engineering a rare victory
over their border rival seemed to be
coming true.
And then it all unraveled. Ohio State
scored two touchdowns to
take the lead with just over
two minutes remaining,
and Penn State was unable
to answer. The Buckeyes
trapped Miles Sanders in
the backfield for a 2-yard
loss on fourth-and-5 to all
but seal a 27-26 victory.
It was an especially bitter defeat for
the Nittany Lions in that it was their
sixth loss in the past seven meetings
with Ohio State. And the fol-
lowing week, that pain was
compounded when the Lions
surrendered a touchdown
with 19 seconds left and fell
to Michigan State, 21-17.
Heading into their
matchup with Indiana on
Oct. 20, the Lions had lost
