102 ■ THE WOLFPACKER to relays, but I think it's going to have to be replace Ryan Held by committee. "The best way for us to do that is ev- eryone gets one step better then we have a good shot at replacing those points that we lose with him." Among the candidates that could help are sophomore Giovanni Izzo and fresh- man Nyls Korstanje. Izzo recorded top-10 times in NC State history in the 50 (ninth) and 100 (seventh) during his rookie season. Sophomores Eric Knowles and Jack McIntyre are leading contenders to step into Ipsen's leadership role on the distance races. Elsewhere, Holloway is excited to bring back all of his divers and breaststroke swimmers. Junior James Brady qualified for nationals in the three-meter and plat- form dives. Holloway also expects to wel- come talented Polish import Rafal Kusto for the spring semester to help boost the breaststroke swimmers. ■ Newcomer To Watch Freshman Nyls Korstanje from Nijmegen, Nether- lands, was rated one of the top 11 swimmers in the 2018 class by CollegeSwimming.com, and he has quickly made his impact at NC State. In the season- opening meet against South Carolina, he won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races, with his time in the 50 almost cracking the top 10 in school history. • Lush, verdant landscaping • Nationally accredited, locally owned, not-for-profit • Dedicated to independence, security and peace of mind y p LIFESTYLES CREATED ONE PERSON AT A TIME. • A 42-acre urban oasis LIFESTYLES CREATED ONE PERSON AT A TIME. Last year, the Gamecocks finished 17th at the NCAA Championships. • NC State added a significant hire to its coach- ing staff in legendary former Virginia head coach Mark Bernardino, who won 16 ACC titles in men's swimming and 11 in women's swimming from 1978-2013. "I think the best thing that Mark can bring is if there is any adversity or any uncomfortable times that we are going to face, he's probably dealt with it multiple times," head coach Braden Holloway said. "He's going to be able to guide our program a lot better. "Even with myself there are going to be things that are probably going to come up that I am going to need help with and he's probably been through that ringer." ■ By The Numbers 2 The Pack's standing behind California for swim- ming points only at last year's NCAA Champion- ships.
