NOVEMBER 2018 ■ 113 first round of the Puerto Rico Classic last February. Shipp averaged 71.94 strokes per round, which ranks 15th-best in program history. The junior from Duluth, Ga., was a PING All-Region East Team selection and fin- ished with four top-10 finishes, two top- five marks and he won the Golfweek Con- ference Challenge on Sept. 17-19, 2017, beating out 74 other golfers. "He is a pretty powerful guy that can hit the ball pretty solid," McPhaul said. "He hits it a long way, so he can hit short clubs to the greens." Shipp got off to a great start this fall by winning the Wolfpack Intercollegiate. He shot a 64 on the final day to help lead NC State to a team title. "Ben has done great and we have seen him slowly and steadily continue to mature and grow not only in his skills in his golf game, but also his work ethic and attention Cardinal International Trucks 1526 South Blount Street, Raleigh, NC 27603 (919) 832-5871 www.cardinalinternationaltrucks.com Sometimes, adding just the right person to a team makes all the difference. Noting The Pack • When a golf coach talks about a player's hands being gifted, you tend to start to hang on every world. Junior Benjamin Shipp falls into the category of having great hands around the green. Shipp shot a sub-70 round seven different times last year, including a season-low 64 on the second of three days at the NCAA Regional. "His hands are really gifted — touch shots, chip shots, pitch shots, bunker shots, lob shots, putts, distance putts — all those sorts of things," head coach Press McPhaul said. "He has great hands and really use those hands to hit the ball the way it exactly needs to be." • Senior Stephen Franken brings a powerful driver off the tee, but he gets his edge by being sound in his technique. He can create the same shot consistently, and then when he's on the green, he takes care of business. McPhaul describes golfers like that having a "nose for the hole." "His golf swing is very fundamental," McPhaul said. "It is one that teachers would try to emulate and use as a model. His golf swing is really good in that regard."
