Nittany Lion Chuck Cherundolo made a big impact on Pennsylvania football
O
ne of Penn State's greatest linebackers, who played before the
school became famous as Linebacker U, passed away over the
holidays, but his death hardly
made a ripple among modern day Nittany Lion fans.
Chuck Cherundolo was not only Penn
State's premier football player as a
two-way linebacker-center in the early
and mid-1930s, but was also one of
the outstanding centers for the Pittsburgh Steelers and co-captain of the
1947 team that was the best in Steelers
history until the 1970s.
Even some old-time Philadelphia Eagles fans might remember him because
he also played for and against the Eagles at an unusual juncture in the
evolution of that franchise during an
NFL playing and coaching career span-
