www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 5, 2018 15 UNDER THE DOME 105 Years Ago: Nov. 1, 1913 In a watershed event in Notre Dame's football history, a stunning 35-13 victory at Eastern power Army makes headlines for the small Catholic school in the Midwest. Because Notre Dame is blackballed from the Western Conference (later named the Big Ten), first-year head coach and athletics director Jesse Harper, in an effort to grow the program, assembles a killer November schedule that has Notre Dame travel to West Point, Penn State, St. Louis and Austin, Texas, on Thanksgiving Day versus the Longhorns. Beginning with the stirring victory against Army highlighted by a newfangled passing attack that features quarterback Gus Dorais and team captain and wide re- ceiver Knute Rockne, Harper's barnstorming troops finish unbeaten in November for a 7-0 final record. Unofficially, Dorais is credited with completing 14 of 17 passes for 243 yards, incomprehensible numbers in those days, with the opening tally a 25-yard pass to Rockne. The Irish close with a 28-0 run, with 21 points coming in the fourth quarter, on two touchdowns from Joe Pliska (one on a run, another a pass) and All-American fullback Ray Eichenlaub. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 4, 1978 Versus 7-0 and No. 11-ranked Navy, which boasts the nation's top defense that is allowing only 158.1 total yards per game and 57.0 on the ground, Notre Dame tailback Vagas Ferguson romps for a school-record 219 rushing yards, highlighted by an 80-yard touchdown, in a 27-7 victory in Cleveland. Overall, the No. 15 Irish rack up 530 total yards, including 375 on the ground. Fullback Jerome Heav- ens, who held the single-game record at 200 from the previous year in a victory versus Army, adds 100 rushing yards in the sixth straight Notre Dame win after opening 0-2. This also marked the last of 11 meetings Notre Dame and Navy had in Cleveland's Municipal Stadium, with the first occurring in 1932. 30 Years Ago: Nov. 5, 1988 A 54-11 romp by No. 1 Notre Dame against Rice features freshman Raghib "Rocket" Ismail scoring on 83- and 87-yard kickoff returns to tie an NCAA record for the most in one game. The only other Fighting Irish player who had returned two kickoffs for scores in a game was Paul Castner versus Kalamazoo in 1922. 20 Years Ago: Nov. 7, 1998 Trailing 31-26 with 1:07 remaining, Boston College has a first-and-goal at the Notre Dame 4-yard line. Star tailback Mike Cloud, the nation's second-leading rusher, is sent three straight times into the middle but can't get past the one-yard line, and on fourth down the Eagles call their final time- out with 11 seconds left. On fourth down, safety Deke Cooper bursts through the middle untouched and drills Cloud for a two-yard loss, keeping 7-1 Notre Dame's hopes alive for a Bowl Cham- pionship Series bid. 5 Years Ago: Nov. 2, 2013 A school-record nine lead changes oc- cur before freshman running back Tarean Folston dives over from a yard out with 3:47 remaining to give Notre Dame a hard- fought 38-34 victory over Navy. It also is Notre Dame's 10th consecutive victory that was decided by one score or less, tying it for second best in school history. The previous record for most lead changes in a Notre Dame game was seven in a 34-30 loss at Penn State in 1983 and also in the 24-23 1973 Sugar Bowl victory versus Ala- bama that won the national title. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 1‑7 YOU DON'T WAIT FOR MAIL DELIVERY!
