DECEMBER 2018 THE WOLVERINE 17   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Senior backer Maggie Bettez has been an exemplary student- athlete during her four years at Michigan. She started 38 of the 42 ath- letic contests she appeared in throughout her sophomore and junior campaigns, before earning the starting nod in all 21 games this year as a senior. As for her work in the classroom, Bettez was tabbed to the Field Hockey Academic All-Big Ten team as both a sophomore and junior, but was quick to deflect the credit. "We have the best resources in the country here at Michigan, and everyone helps you to be your best both on and off the field," she explained. "It is nice to see my hard work come to fruition though. "We're challenged in so many ways as student-athletes, and it's very rewarding when you figure out how to balance your time. Friends and teammates are al- ways there to help, and it all eventually works itself out." Bettez helped guide the Wolverines to a 21-3 record last year and Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles, and played a vital role in the club winning its second consecutive league regular-season crown this season. "Last year was one of the best seasons in Michigan field hockey history. Repeat- ing as Big Ten champs means a lot to everyone," she exclaimed. "We worked so hard for it and earned everything that came to us." The senior was named a captain on this year's squad and admitted the added responsibility has made the club's success even more meaningful. "It's hard to put into words," she noted. "It's something I'm very proud of. Being able to work every day with my teammates makes it even more impactful — it's just been a huge honor." Originally from Acton, Mass., Bettez revealed that she plans on heading back to the East Coast following graduation and knows exactly what she wants to do with her Michigan degree once it's in hand. "Sport management is my major. I'd like to head back to Boston and look at roles in insurance and real estate, and hopefully consulting after grad school," she said. "I began the major my freshman year when I read the program for it. I thought it'd be the perfect fit for me. "I want to enter the business world someday, and I actually find the material fun — it's something I would read in my free time, and I really enjoy studying it every day." Bettez admitted she's sad her time at Michigan is coming to an end, but couldn't be more thankful for the memories she has made in Ann Arbor. "The experience has exceeded my expectations in every way," she said. "It's been the best fit possible, and I'm so grateful for the last four years here. "Once I have my degree, I think I'll actually appreciate it further down the road. There is a responsibility that comes with graduating from this University, because you want to bring that 'Leaders and Best' mentality into every role you take on." — Austin Fox Student-Athlete Of The Month Field Hockey Senior Backer Maggie Bettez Bettez is a two-time Field Hockey Academic All- Big Ten selection.
