Gym Rat Hard Work Has Helped Third-Year Kelsey Wolfe Become One Of UVa's Most Important Players O By Brandon Lloyd nly about 130 miles separate Germantown, Md., and Charlottesville, Va., but Kelsey Wolfe felt a little out of place when she stepped on Grounds at UVa in 2010. After being named the Washington Post's All-Metro Player of the Year and leading her Seneca Valley High School team to the Maryland 3A state championship game, Wolfe was no longer the star player on her team. She was now a newcomer and a role player for head coach Debbie Ryan and the Cavaliers. "It was definitely difficult doing the transition from high school to college," Wolfe said. "Just the pace and the speed, kind of the whole overall pace of the game was a lot different." Wolfe recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds in her first career college game against Hofstra, but played in only 22 games and averaged just 2.7 points and 1.3 rebounds in 9.1 minutes per contest during the 2010-11 season. Wolfe is in the midst of a career season, averaging 12.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.3 steals per game during UVa's 11-5 start. While things were changing within the program, Wolfe found herself in the same role as a second-year that she was during her rookie campaign. "The rotations weren't in her favor for her first two seasons in terms of the number of minutes she was getting," Boyle said.
