36 ■ THE WOLFPACKER game and a 62-yard pass to Jimmy Grissett that set up Carlos King's game-winning touchdown run. The victory was the Pack's ninth of the season, tying the school record at the time. Even though the Pack was 3-8 in his final campaign, it was one of the most rewarding seasons of his life, because he finished his dual-sport career holding the NC State career records for passing yards (5,925), completions (442), attempts (785), 300-yard passing games (four), touchdown passes (38), total offense (5,846) and total offense per play (6.61). In base- ball, he still owns the school record with 35 wins, 60 starts and 426 in- nings pitched in his career. His 386 strikeouts are second only to Carlos Rodon's 436. He was a member of the ACC's 50th anniversary baseball team and a 2012 inductee into the NC State Baseball Hall of Fame. Harvey was drafted for the final time in the 17th round of the 1995 MLB Draft by the Cleveland Indians. He spent two years in the minor leagues before he and Catherine moved back to the Triangle perma- nently. Harvey finished his degree in communications in 1998. Cath- erine was a double major in accounting and business management in 1994 and received her MBA from Meredith in 2000. "This is where we always wanted to be," he said. "It's where we wanted to raise our family. We're happy to call this area home." The Harveys teamed with basketball legend Chris Corchiani and former Wolfpack golfer Mark West to begin various financial ventures, including a mortgage refinancing business. For the last 10 years, Har- vey, Corchiani and West have owned Tryon Title, a commercial and residential title insurance company that serves the Southeast. Connections to the athletics world have help create a solid busi- ness, Harvey noted, but he and the others care- fully toe the rivalry line. "It obviously has opened some doors, and we do business with a lot of people with ties to NC State," Harvey said. "But we work mostly with lawyers, and NC State doesn't have a law school. Most of the people we work with graduated from North Carolina, Wake Forest, Duke, Campbell and North Carolina Central. "We try not to see colors when we are doing business." Catherine is the company's chief financial officer and the family's official calendar keeper. "If there is anyone who wears a cape in our family, it's her," Harvey said. "She handles all the money and tells us all where we need to be. "We couldn't do either without her." Despite their hectic schedules, the Harveys still make time to keep an eye on Wolfpack athletics. Terry is close to head baseball coach El- liott Avent, even though he had pitched his final game for the Wolfpack before Avent came to Raleigh from New Mexico State in 1997. He has nothing but respect for everything Avent has done for the program in his quarter-century on the job, including a 2013 trip to the College World Series. "Everything Elliott has done is phenomenal," Harvey said. "I'm not sure everyone appreciates his success in baseball. I know how competi- tive and hard it is, especially these days." There's only 25 days in age difference between Harvey and current Wolfpack football head coach Dave Doeren, and they have forged a fast friendship. "We came up at the same time, and we went through a lot of the same things as college football players," Harvey said. "We have a lot in common, and we have a good friendship. He understands the program and the fan base and the school. "He works hard to put his team in good position to win and has done a great job changing the whole culture of recruiting in the state. He doesn't show a lot of outward emotion, but I know how passionate he is about building something special here at NC State." As an All-American, All-ACC and record-setting performer, Harvey is a permanent fixture in the NC State pantheon of accomplished multi- sport stars. ■ Tim Peeler is a regular contributor to The Wolfpacker and can be reached at tmpeeler@ncsu.edu.
