hen former NC State head baseball coach and
assistant basketball coach Sam Esposito died
earlier this year, Monte Towe is pretty sure his
old mentor went to the great beyond having
never forgiven him.
Somewhere between winning an NCAA and two ACC
basketball championships and three consecutive ACC base-
ball titles, the diminutive point guard and second baseman
from Converse, Ind., lost Esposito's glove. He's not exactly
positive it was the one Esposito used during the 1959 World
Series with the Chicago White Sox, but he's pretty sure it was.
"When I was a freshman, Coach Esposito wanted me to
come out for baseball," Towe remembered. "I didn't really
know if that was something I wanted to do or not, so I didn't
bring my glove with me from home. I had to borrow his,
Towe was the point guard on the Wolfpack's ACC championship squads in 1973 and 1974, and was the most valuable player in the
1974 NCAA title game victory against Marquette.
