T H E M O N T H I N . . . O P I N I O N S McSorley had an inner quality of attempting to find a way – without frustration or outbursts at teammates – but simply seeking a method to win like water flowing to- ward cracks. That he didn't always succeed is not the point. That he spent all of his energy toward that end is. That's what leadership and being a good teammate is about. DAVID JONES PENNLIVE.COM My career as a player isn't over. I wholeheartedly believe that. I was confident that I could play in college when I got to this level when a lot of people didn't think that I could. And I'm extremely confident that I can go out and perform at the next level. That's something I've always dreamt of doing and something that I plan on accom- plishing. Sure, absolutely. But all in all, I'm excited about going into the core of the Big Ten this season and seeing what these guys can do." Penn State gave Patrick Chambers a contract extension last spring follow- ing a 26-13 season, the best in his seven years as head coach. He is signed through the 2021-22 season, and Barbour said she expects him to be the Nittany Lions' coach for the duration of that pact. "I'm fully com- mitted to Pat and his leadership of our program," she said. The situation just down the hall at the Bryce Jordan Center could be somewhat trickier. The Lady Lion basketball program has been strug- gling again this season, sporting an 8- 6 overall record as of mid-January, including a 1-2 mark in Big Ten play. Coach Coquese Washington won Big Ten regular-season championships in 2012, '13 and '14, but Penn State has posted only one winning season in the past four years and hasn't been to the NCAA tournament since 2014. The Lady Lions' tumble has been a disappointment, especially given their history as one of the more suc- cessful programs in the Big Ten and perennial NCAA tournament partici- pants. "There is no doubt that where that program has been for the past four, now into five years, is not Penn State's standard," Barbour said. "It's not Co- quese's standard, it's certainly not my standard. But what we have to re- member is that this is somebody who has brought great success to Penn State women's basketball. It's not like she doesn't know how to do that, that she's not proven it, that she's not done it. So that's going to be a little different situation than maybe some- body who has never shown that they have the ability to do it. "But I think the important thing for our student-athletes, the important thing for our community, is that no- body believes where we are right now is OK, and that includes Coquese." ■ Q U O T E S
