A NEW ICE AGE
For the first time in its 89-year history, Notre Dame Stadium hosted a hockey
game with the 2019 NHL Winter Classic between the Boston Bruins and Chicago
Blackhawks Jan. 1.
A sellout crowd of 76,126 — the fourth most in any hockey game and the second
most in the 12-year history of the Winter Classic — saw Boston post a 4-2 win. The
South Bend Symphony Orchestra played the Notre Dame Victory March while the
Leprechaun and Fighting Irish hockey team led both teams into the rink.
Four days later, sunny and 49-degree weather resulted in the Notre Dame-
Michigan game starting an hour later than scheduled to aid player safety. Michi-
gan defeated Notre Dame by the same 4-2 score in the venue that had 23,422 in
attendance.
