T H E C L A S S O F 2 0 1 9 >> WHAT HE DID Porter was a two-year starter at North Allegheny, one of the Pittsburgh area's top high school pro- grams. For his career, he totaled 10 inter- ceptions and added 48 tackles, 34 of which were solo stops. Porter also played wide receiver at times, totaling 19 recep- tions for 329 yards and four touchdowns. He was a team captain as a senior, helping lead North Allegheny to a 10-1 record and a Quad County Conference Class 6A title. WHAT HE WON Porter received =rst-team All-State honors at cornerback from USA Today and the Pennsylvania Football Writ- ers Association. He was also nominated for the Mr. PA Football Award. A three-star prospect according to Rivals.com, Porter is listed 52nd nationally among cornerbacks in the Class of 2019 and 11th among all prospects in Pennsylvania. WHERE HE VISITED Porter, the son of former Pittsburgh Steelers All-Pro line- backer and assistant coach Joey Porter Sr., visited Pittsburgh and West Virginia in the spring of his junior season before earning an o?er from Penn State while on campus in April. He also visited and con- sidered LSU before com- mitting to the Nittany Lions this past Septem- ber. He earned 18 schol- arship o?ers during the course of his recruitment. Among the other notable schools that extended of- fers were Arizona State, Maryland, Miami, Nebraska, UCF and West Virginia. Porter told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Re- view that he was eager to "make a name for myself and be my own person." But, he added, "People will always know me as Joey Porter's son, and I'm cool with that because he did a lot of great things in the [NFL]. That's a good spot." QUOTABLE Art Walker, North Allegheny coach: "Joey is a very long defensive back with exceptional ball skills. He has great playmaking ability in multiple facets of the game. Week in and week out, he shut down the top receiver of every opponent on our schedule. He is a quiet leader who leads by his play on the =eld. Joey has a very competitive personality and a great understanding of the game." PHIL'S TAKE Porter is one of the most fundamentally sound members of Penn State's class. He has excellent >exibility in his hips and is capable of playing high- quality press man-to-man defense. Al- though he has the size to play safety, he was recruited =rst to play cornerback. Still, with his 6-foot-1 frame, it's not hard to imagine Porter adding 20 pounds while retaining his athletic ability. If he's able to do that, he could ultimately =nd a role at either safety position or maybe the star hybrid OLB spot in Penn State's 4-2- 5 defensive scheme. Porter has superb tackling technique and attacks the run from his cornerback position. ■ PITTSBURGH KID An- choring the second- ary, Porter helped North Allegheny go 10-1 and win a confer- ence title last season.
