WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD Penn State junior Danae Rivers ran the 10th- fastest collegiate time in history in the women's mile, 8nishing in 4 min- utes, 29.47 seconds at the 112th NYRR Millrose Games on Feb. 9 at the Armory Track & Field Center in the Bronx, N.Y. Rivers broke her own school record with her performance in the NYRR Wanamaker Mile race and set her third record of the 2019 indoor season. She had previously set Penn State marks in the 800- and 1,000-meter runs. Rivers trimmed more than three seconds o9 her previous best time of 4:32.55 in the mile. The Derby, Conn., native now owns four Penn State indoor records. Rivers was recently named to the Bowerman 2019 Women's Mid-In- door Watch List as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. She is the 8rst female student-athlete in the pro- gram's history to be named to the watch list. WOMEN'S LACROSSE Attacker Madison Carter led the 12th-ranked Nittany Lions with 8ve points, in- cluding four goals, in a season-open- ing 13-7 victory over No. 11 Towson Feb. 9 in Holuba Hall. The Nittany Lions scored 10 goals in the second half, including six of the 8rst seven goals in the half. With her five points on the day, Carter reached the 200-point mark for her career, becoming the 15th player in the program's history to do so. Prior to Penn State's game against Lehigh on Feb. 16, the senior from Davidsonville, Md., had 202 career points, with 184 goals and 18 assists. FALL SPORTS Penn State was third in the 8nal fall 2018 standings for the Lear8eld Directors' Cup. The Nittany Lions 8nished second to Ohio State in 2017 and fell short again last year, with the Buckeyes repeating as champs. The vulnerability the Lions showed in those second-place 8nishes turned out to be entirely illusory; they went on to win the NCAA tournament both years. But just because NCAA championships are the program's No. 1 objective doesn't mean that Sanderson and company wouldn't love to add some more Big Ten hardware to their increasingly crowded trophy case. This year's tournament will take place at Minnesota, and any number of rivals could pose a challenge to PSU, including the hosts. As of early Febru- ary, seven Big Ten teams were ranked in the FloWrestling.com top 10. The undefeated Nittany Lions were 8rst, followed by Ohio State (second), Michigan (fourth), Iowa (8:h), Nebraska (sixth), Minnesota (seventh) and Northwestern (ninth). It should be an exciting couple of days no matter who emerges victorious. –M.H. SCORECARD
