MARCH 2019 THE WOLVERINE 15   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS THEY SAID IT "It got a little chippy out there. Everybody is tough on the court until things get deep, and that's when you find out who's actually tough. It's not about those types of plays, though — it's about finding out who's going to take a charge, who's go- ing to dive on the floor, and who's going to make sure the team's mindset is great, because that's toughness. My family is close with Justin Ahrens' family, so I'm upset with him bumping me like that. I don't appreciate that." — Michigan junior point guard Zavier Simpson after U-M's 65-49 win over Ohio State Jan. 29, referring to how the OSU freshman forward Ahrens elbowed him in pregame warmups "Harbaugh and his staff went to Georgia for five-star Christopher Hinton and flipped five-star DB Daxton Hill away from Alabama. Those successes were huge. Michigan has a diverse class from all over the country — a high four-star running back from California, a four-star quarterback from Reno, it went to Connecticut for a few top players — and it's propelled them to the top of the Big Ten rankings despite another underwhelming season. The coaching staff deserves credit for be- ing able to accomplish that." — Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Adam Gorney, explaining why he thinks Michigan's 2019 recruiting class is the most surprising haul in the country "This year was the weirdest January, and I mean that as a compliment. We did very few in-home visits, so it was low stress and mainly entailed bringing under- classmen to campus. January was actually kind of neat in that it allowed us to get ahead." — Michigan director of recruiting Matt Dudek, explaining the impact December's early signing period has had on college football's traditional signing day in February "If I'm compared to Johnny Orr at any time, that's a heck of a compliment. If he were still alive, I think he would say I've had some really good assistant coaches and some really good players, and I would have to say the exact same thing." — Michigan head coach John Beilein after he picked up his 12st Big Ten win at U-M with a 77-65 victory over Rutgers Feb. 5, passing former head man Johnny Orr for the most league victories in program history — Austin Fox NationalFootballPost.com NFL Draft analyst Dion Caputi on the former U-M defensive end "I'm a very big Rashan Gary fan, and I came to like him more and more as his collegiate career went on. He can be a defensive end in either a 3-4 or a 4-3 base front in the NFL, be- cause he has a lot of positional versatility — some people may consider him a tweener in that sense, but I see it as versatility. … If he manages to escape the top 10 in the draft, it would be shocking to me, and it would be a gift for someone outside that range. There's just too much natural ability for him not to go within the first 10 picks." PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL (Item #1365) CUSTOM GRILL COVER Hand-made in the USA using the finest commercial grade vinyl.
