to join 2020 class
Bowens' decision enlivens an otherwise quiet stretch

F
ebruary was a quiet month on the re-
cruiting trail, but it still brought good
news for Penn State's coaching sta;
and fans.
On Feb. 19, the Nittany Lions added
Nevada quarterback Micah Bowens to
their Class of 2020. Bowens' announce-
ment came as a surprise to many, as the
three-star signal-caller only began
speaking with o;ensive coordinator
Ricky Rahne about a month prior to his
decision. However, his recruitment
moved fast, as he visited Penn State on
Feb. 1. By the time he le= campus, he held
an o;er from the Lions. Once he got
home and thought it over some more, he
knew that University Park was the place
he wanted to be.
The 2018 season was Bowens' :rst op-
portunity to play quarterback at Bishop
Gorman, which annually ranks among
the top high school programs in the
country. This past season, he and his
teammates began the year 1-3, but those
three losses were against some of the na-
tion's best teams, including Mater Dei of
Santa Ana, Calif., which :nished No. 1
overall in multiple high school polls.
From there, the Gaels went on to win 10
consecutive games and another Nevada
4A championship. Bowens :nished with
2,778 yards passing and 927 yards rush-
ing. He totaled 44 touchdowns (29 pass-
ing, 15 rushing) and threw only eight
interceptions.
Last month may have been slow when
it came to visits, but that won't be the
case in March and April. As of early
March, BWI had con:rmed that more
than a dozen 2020 prospects were plan-
ning to visit in the weeks leading up to
the Blue-White Game. Some notable
prospects who planned to visit early in
the spring practice schedule included
four-star tight end Theo Johnson, who
was planning to be on campus March 12-
13 to watch Penn State's :rst spring prac-
tice session, as well as defensive tackle
Cole Brevard and wide receiver Jaden
Dottin, who were planning to be on cam-
pus March 16.
Johnson, who lives in Windsor, Ontario,
has made it clear that the Lions are
among his early favorites. Brevard of
