Andy Heck, 1985-88 Tight End/Left Tackle Now an NFL coach, the 1988 All-American enjoyed Notre Dame's return to glory this season By Lou Somogyi A ndy Heck, a co-captain and left tackle for the 1988 Notre Dame national championship team, was worried on New Year's Day. It wasn't the case that the ninth-year Jacksonville Jaguars offensive line coach was fretting about his team's 2-14 record this past season, which prompted the firing of general manager Gene Smith Dec. 31, leaving the coaching staff in a precarious position. Heck knows how the business works, and just a couple weeks after our chat with Heck, he landed in Kansas City as offensive line coach under newly hired boss Andy Reid. "It's hard not to pay attention," Heck said of the unrest in Jacksonville at the time. "I'm really appreciative of my job; I know there are very few of them. To have a job coaching in the NFL is a great honor and privilege for me. I'm glad to have been in Jacksonville for as long as I have.
