but couldn't participate due to knee injury … Participated in the Nike NFTC Event in Champaign, Ill., which qualified him for an invite to The Opening in Beaverton, Ore. Brian Kelly's Comments: "He's a physical, strong guy that can play inside for us. He came up to camp, and we got a chance to see him in person, and that makes such a big difference to us. He'll be a nice player for us working inside out." Lincoln-Way West Head Coach Dave Ernst Comments: "He's got a lot of God-given gifts, but the biggest thing that jumps out at you is his athleticism. He's getting leaner, heavier and stronger all the time. He's not a waist bender. He's a knee bender, and he has great balance. That's what sets him apart from everybody else. He's a big, strong kid." Tom Lemming Of Prep Football Report: "He's a steady player. He's one of the two best in the area [with the other being former Irish target and LSU signee Ethan Pocic]. He's a technician. I'm very impressed with him, and he's going to benefit from a redshirt year. He's a guy that can play guard or tackle." Recruitment: Northwestern, Purdue and Ohio State were the first to offer, but Notre Dame joined the mix in late February after he had a strong showing at the Core 6 Winter Showcase the month prior … Illinois, Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin all received visits, but he quickly narrowed his focus to the Buckeyes and Irish despite Alabama, Nebraska and others joining the offer list … Attended Notre Dame's junior day on March 24, 2012, and offered his pledge before leaving campus … Attended six Irish games in the fall and used his official visit for the Football Awards Show over the Dec. 7 weekend … Primary recruiter at Notre Dame was offensive coordinator Chuck Martin. Why He Chose Notre Dame: "You can't beat the education at Notre Dame. When you add in all the other aspects about the school, like its football tradition, there's no place better. When I committed Notre Dame was not back on top yet football-wise, so that shows how important the other things about the program are to me. But now that football is back on the rise, it's the perfect college to be a part of." Jason Sapp's Scouting Report: Stays low, keeps a wide base and chips off the initial block well to get to the next level of the defense … Can step in either direction well and crushes the inside man on down blocks … Pulls well, which is often used in Notre Dame's running game, and also possesses a combination of strength and athletic ability which will make him successful … Physical at the point of attack and sets target straight through the defender. 2013 Projection: McGovern is facing a six-month recovery from a surgical procedure on his knee and will likely spend his first season recovering and weight training.
