Hartman decided in September that the Nittany Lions were a better fit. WHAT HE WON Hartman was named to Virginias All-Division I first-team unit. He was named a two-star prospect by Rivals.com and Scout.com, and a threestar prospect by 247Sports.com. WHERE HE VISITED Hartman made an unofficial visit to Penn State last October and was in attendance at Beaver Stadium when the Nittany Lions rallied to defeat Northwestern. His official visit came two months later during the first weekend of December. Hartman also had offers from Liberty, Richmond and Temple, in addition to Maryland. WHO OPENED THE DOOR Larry Johnson made the first contact, approaching Hartman at the end of a summer camp session to compliment his efforts. The relationship grew even after Hartmans commitment to Maryland. Officially, Charles London was in charge of Hartmans recruitment, though. Mac McWhorter also helped once Penn State decided to recruit him on the offensive side of the ball. QUOTABLE Hartman: Im really looking forward to working with these guys who are part of my class. Im really excited about Penn State. This is where I want to be, so Im going to do everything I can to appreciate the opportunity and take advantage of it. PHILS TAKE It will be interesting to see how much more growing Hartman does over the next two years. His brother played college basketball, and his father played football at Virginia Tech. Both stand about 6-7. Hartman could end up growing to more than 290 pounds. He has exceptionally quick feet and is an excellent pass blocker. Hes likely to start out at guard at Penn State, but if he has a growth spurt and adds a few more inches, he could easily end up at tackle. Hartman will most definitely redshirt his freshman year. He had been selected for the 2013 Chesapeake Bowl North Squad, so he and his teammates two of whom were also committed to Penn State began practice in the days after Christmas leading up to the game on Dec. 29. Wearing the pads at first might have felt odd, but it didnt take I long for Cothran to adjust. It was kinda weird just running with the helmet on and the pads, getting used to hitting again, Cothran said. But after that first practice, it was all what I was supposed to be doing. He made that point even more clear when he picked up the first sack of the all-star game. Cothran, a 6-foot-5, 235-pound defensive end, garnered rave reviews for his performance in the Chesapeake Bowl and in the week of practice leading up to it similar to the reviews he had re-
