The opening of Panzer Stadium this year has coincided with one of the best starts in the history of the Penn State men's lacrosse program, as the Nittany Lion laxers earlier this year rose to the No. 1 spot in the national polls. Head- ing into their Big Ten opener against Maryland on March 31, the Lions were 8rst in both the Inside Lacrosse media poll and USILA coaches' rankings, a re9ection of their per- formance in February and March, which included victories in seven of their 8rst eight games. During the nonconference season, the Lions used a devastating o:ense to lay waste to a series of opponents, including third-ranked Cornell. Through their 8rst eight games, they were leading in the country in scoring with an average of 18.38 goals per game. Junior Mac O'Keefe was the nation's highest-scoring player with an average of 4.50 goals per game, while senior Grant Ament was 8rst nationally in assists with 6.57 per game. Johns Hopkins opened its season with three losses in its 8rst six games, but it's a perennial power that Penn State has defeated only once in 10 previous meet- ings, with that victory taking place last April. There will be a lot at stake in the rematch, so expect the Lions' new home to be rocking. –M.H. SCORECARD N O T E B O O K MEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING Senior Hector Garcia Boissier won silver in the 1-meter dive at the NCAA cham- pionships, placing second with a score of 399.30 March 28 in Austin, Texas. Garcia Boissier became the 8rst Penn State diver since Steve Bohner in 2002 to advance to the championship 8nal at NCAAs, post- ing a preliminary score of 331.20 to rank seventh. He then became Penn State's highest-8nishing men's diver, besting Chris Devine's third-place 8nish in the 1-meter in 1994. In the swimming competition, freshman Michael Daly broke his own school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle race March 30. Daly 8nished in 15 minutes, 2.66 seconds, besting his time of 15:03.81 at the Big Ten championships to place 33rd. Daly also placed 26th in the 400 IM and 33rd in the 200 backstroke. His time of 1 minute, 43.08 seconds in the 200 was a career-best. With Boissier leading the way, the Nittany Lions 8nished the team com- petition in 29th place with 27 points. It was their highest 8nish since 2015. BASEBALL The Nittany Lions were still looking for their 8rst Big Ten victory of the season a;er falling, 2-1, at Purdue on March 31. Cole McKen- zie hit a sacri8ce 9y in the bottom of the 10th inning to bring home the winning run for the Boilermakers. Penn State, which won 13 of its 8rst 16 games, fell to 14-8 overall and 0-5 in conference play. MEN'S VOLLEYBALL Penn State ex- tended its season-best winning streak to four matches with a sweep of Sacred Heart on March 30 in Fair- 8eld, Conn. Freshman Brett Wildman had 11 kills and hit .300 for the match, as the Nittany Lions rolled, 25-19, 25-15, 25-20. The victory, which followed wins over Ohio State, Saint Francis and Harvard, li;ed Penn State to 12-12 on the season and 8-2 in the EIVA. ■
