Under the Dome Top of The Class Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Chris Giesting — So., Track & Field The school's fastest man set the Big East's top times this season in the 200-meter and 500-meter races during the Notre Dame Invitational in late January. His time of 47.64 seconds in the 400-meter sprint is the 21st fastest in the country in 2013. Giesting is picking up right where he left off as a freshman, when he won the conference's Most Outstanding Track Performer award. Bill Bass — Sr., Men's Swimming The Irish senior won his first Big East Swimmer of the Week nomination in late January. Bass won the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter individual medley to propel the Irish to a close victory over Cleveland State. He was a Scholar All-American as a junior, and this season he will attempt to be one of three Irish swimmers to compete in multiple NCAA Championships during his career. Katie Naughton — Fr., Women's Soccer After a successful rookie season at Notre Dame, Naughton was one of 24 young players invited to the U.S. National Team's Under-20 training camp during the first week of February. She started 23 games in the back of the Irish formation as a freshman and scored three goals. She'll be joined on the U-20 team by classmate Cari Roccaro, who helped the U.S. win a gold medal in the world championship last August. Margaret Smith — Jr., Women's Lacrosse Smith, a team captain, is one of three members of the Irish lacrosse team named to the Preseason All-Big East squad. The midfielder was a first team all-conference pick at the end of last season after leading Notre Dame in draw controls and finishing second on the roster in forcing turnovers. Smith is joined by junior attack Lindsay Powell and sophomore defender Barbara Sullivan on the preseason all-conference team.
