www.BLUEANDGOLD.com MAY 2019 47 MEN'S BASKETBALL in the past is no guarantee of what will occur in the future. However, the track record of player development under Brey is such where a benefit of doubt has been well earned: Colin Falls The school's all-time leader in three- pointers made (331 from 2003-07) aver- aged 15.6 minutes his freshman year while contributing 4.6 points per game. Russell Carter A first-team All-Big East player with classmate Falls, Carter totaled 23 to- tal minutes as a freshman and 204 as a sophomore. Through his first two years, he scored merely 92 total points. Rob Kurz The blue-collar forward played a paltry 66 minutes as a freshman before averaging 6.4 points and 5.1 rebounds in a more regular role as a sophomore. Kyle McAlarney Extraordinary pure shooter aver- aged 6.6 points per contest as a fresh- man before getting expelled from school for a semester 12 games into his sophomore season. Tim Abromaitis Amassed only 40 minutes in 12 game appearances as a freshman — and then redshirted as a sophomore because of his need for more develop- ment. Who could have ever envisioned him as a future All-Big East forward? Jack Cooley The power forward played only 111 minutes as a freshman and upped it to 10.3 minutes as a sophomore when he averaged 3.7 points and 3.1 rebounds. Some tests hinted that his physiol- ogy would allow him to play maybe a maximum of 20 minutes in a game. Instead, he averaged 29 minutes his last two years, and posted a dou- ble-double average as a senior. Jerian Grant The future first-round pick and cur- rent Orlando Magic guard was red- shirted as a freshman, and as a sopho- more he converted a disappointing 38.0 percent of his field goals. That doesn't even include his academic in- eligibility later in his career. Pat Connaughton As the team's lone freshman in 2011-12, the current Milwaukee Bucks guard played 24.1 minutes per game, averaged 7.0 points per game, and shot 42.3 percent overall and 34.2 percent from three-point range. He was one of Brey's more "advanced" rookies. Zach Auguste The post player averaged only 3.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 10.7 min- utes per contest as a freshman, and then 6.7 points and 4.3 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per contest as a sopho- more. As a junior and senior, though, he played an integral role in back-to- back Elite Eight trips. Demetrius Jackson A rare McDonald's All-American recruit for the program, Jackson was humbled as a freshman when he av- eraged only 6.0 points per game on a losing team and was temporarily suspended to get his academics in order. Two years later as a junior he was drafted into the NBA. Steve Vasturia One of Brey's all-time favorites did play quite a bit as a freshman in 2013- 14 at 23.1 minutes per game (with 12 starts), but he shot only 35.0 percent from the field and 32.9 percent from behind the three-point arc while av- eraging 5.0 points. Bonzie Colson, Matt Farrell and Martin Geben The far less heralded class from 2014 had future All-American Colson ranked only 145th by Rivals — lower than nine of the 11 scholarship play- ers on this past year's roster. He aver- aged 5.6 points as a freshman while playing 12.1 minutes per contest. Farrell totaled 62 minutes as a freshman while shooting 3 of 13 from the field, and he averaged 2.6 points in 28 games as a sophomore. Geben appeared to be a hopeless project his first two seasons, but with an injury to Colson his senior year, became a quality ACC center and was named team MVP. John Mooney His No. 144 ranking by Rivals was one spot higher than Colson, but his trajectory far less promising after ap- pearing in only 12 games as a fresh- man (46 mop-up minutes) and averag- ing a modest 5.6 points while making only seven starts as a sophomore. As a junior, the double-double ma- chine earned third-team All-ACC recognition. ✦ 2018-19 Cumulative Stats Player G-GS Min. FGM-A Pct. 3FGM-A Pct. FTM-A Pct. Pts. Reb. Ast. TO Stl. Blk.
