Ross Douglas from Avon, Ohio, and 6-2, 195-pound Dymonte Thomas from Alliance, Ohio are already enrolled and will go through spring practice, along with Bosch, Butt, Charlton and Tuley-Tillman. In addition, the back-end defenders include 6-2, 175-pound Reon Dawson from Trotwood, Ohio; 6-0, 198-pound Delano Hill from Detroit; 5-10, 159-pound Jourdan Lewis from Detroit; and 6-2, 170-pound Channing Stribling from Matthews, N.C. You envision our defense not having to blitz all the time, Mattison said. You want to be able to play a four-man rush and being able to play some zone coverage. In order to do that, youve got to have bigger corners cover the big wide receivers youre seeing now. Its the length. Some guys can be 5-10, but their vertical jump is 40 inches. That makes them six foot. It all comes down to them having the ability to cover the big wide receivers that were seeing. Long Snapper Some were surprised that 6-1, 230-pound Scott Sypniewski from Ottawa, Ill. found his way into the class with a scholarship, but Ferrigno insists they shouldnt be stunned. We like him a lot, Ferrigno said. Weve known that kid forever. His dad played for us at Western Michigan. Greg coached him. There was some familiarity there with the family. Hes a solid kid. We had him in camp. We time snappers all the time. A good snapper is .7, .8. A great snapper is lower than that. He was lower than that all the time. We really think weve got a good one. It helps so much, when you know you can count on a fast snap and let the punter relax and kick. Defensive back Jourdan Lewis (above) was one of three players from Detroit Cass Tech that U-M signed, along with offensive lineman David Dawson and defensive back Delano Hill. photo by lon horwedel
