football recruiting issue He envisions lining up opposite Funchess, giving defenses fits. Tight ends are usually matched up against linebackers, and we have a size and speed advantage to get open, he said. I have that confidence, and Im sure Devin does too, and when you have two of those guys on the field at the same time, you become really dangerous because now you can guarantee that at least one of those guys will have a mismatch, and if you bring in defensive backs to cover them, youll just audible to a run play and run right over them. That will only work if both Funchess and Butt hone their blocking acumen. Williams is much further along, but he failed to catch a single pass in 2012. For the Michigan offense to ful- fill its promise, it needs its tight ends to be more than just a receiver or just a blocker. Weve talked to all of our kids about this to play that position in todays football, and if you watch the NFL because its the best example, you have to be multi-faceted, offensive coordinator Al Borges said. Once they reach the point where theyre comfortable in our offense, they are multi-dimensional, I think well have what we want. We have a lot of young guys that were going to count on to develop at a pretty fast rate. The good news is they have talent. The bad news is it will take them a little bit to figure it all out. Michael Spath
