Juwan Howard's Basketball Timeline • Nov. 2, 1990 — Commits to Michigan during his senior year of high school. Sadly, his grandmother — who raised him — passed away from a heart attack just hours after he pledged, causing Howard, a McDonald's All-American, to move in with his high school coach, Richard Cook. • April 6, 1992 — Helps lead Michigan to the 1992 national championship game as a freshman, where the Wolverines fall to No. 1-seeded Duke, 71-51. Howard concluded his rookie campaign in Ann Arbor averaging 11.1 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. • April 5, 1993 — Guides U-M to a second consecutive spot in the national title contest, where the Maize and Blue suffer a 77-71 setback to North Carolina. Howard's final stat line for the 1992-93 campaign saw him average 14.6 points and 7.4 boards per outing. • April 18, 1994 — An- nounces his intentions to declare for the NBA Draft, three weeks af- ter the Wolverines' sea- son came to an end in the Elite Eight against the eventual national champion Arkansas Razorbacks. Howard averaged 20.8 points and 9.0 rebounds during his junior year, and was named a third-team AP All-American. He is still one of just seven players in program history to surpass 1,500 points (1,526) and 700 rebounds (745). • June 29, 1994 — Selected fifth overall by the Washington Bullets (who later became the Wizards) in the NBA Draft. Howard was tabbed to the NBA's All-Rookie second team in 1995 after averaging 17 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. What They're Saying About The Juwan Howard Hire — Los Angeles Lakers for- ward LeBron James, who was teammates with How- ard in Miami from 2010-13, on Twitter May 21, when it was reported that the latter was expected to be named Michigan's new head coach — Former NBA guard D w yane Wad e, who played with Howard in Miami from 2010-13, on Twitter May 21, when it was revealed that U-M was likely to hire his for- mer teammate NBA GREATS ON TWITTER THE FAB FIVE LOVES IT • "None of us saw this coming, but we're ecstatic for Juwan. … If you would have told me a week ago he'd be the head coach at Michigan, I would have looked at you sideways. "We stay in touch with one another because I've run Fab Five camps in Ann Arbor the past four years that Juwan and the rest of the crew have come to. I haven't spoken with him yet since it became official, but I did talk with both him and [director of athletics] Warde [Manuel] throughout the process. "I'm grateful the University officials went ahead and pulled the trigger on him, even though it seems like a no-brainer. It's still a business decision and there are boxes that need to be checked. Fortunately, Juwan checked those boxes, and his résumé spoke for itself." — Jimmy King on the May 23 edition of CBS Sports' Tiki and Tierney Show 20 THE WOLVERINE JUNE/JULY 2019 PHOTO COURTESY MIAMI HEAT
