getting to know Third-Year Distance Runner Bryan Lewis Those of a certain age remember "One is the Loneliest Number" was a hit for Three Dog Night. But Virginia head coach Bryan Fetzer wasn't complaining about the one victory the Cavaliers recorded at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet: Bryan Lewis' triumph in the 5,000-meter run. Lewis, a third-year from Roanoke, was clocked in 14:59.24. Then, at the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Lewis was timed in a personal best of 8:15.16, which was good for a seventh-place finish. Lewis also has made the ACC honor roll three times. My advice to student-athletes is: Ask questions and be patient. Ask questions of coaches, upperclassmen, how everything works, what they do differently in college and be patient. Transitioning to college is a process that usually takes a year or two. In running, it's a new ballgame. Keep a level head because there are some days when you're way better than you were in high school, and there are some What Is Your Favorite … … TV show: "White Collar" … movie: "Casino Royale" … actor and actress? Photo by Jim Daves/courtesy UVa days when you're not. The primary challenge facing student-athletes today is: I think it's the pressure to perform immediately. What can you do for me now and not what can you do for me next year? I think there is a push from all sides to forego patience and be perfect. The best thing about UVa is: The atmosphere in Charlottesville in general. Everyone is supportive of everything we do. I think that's unique about Charlottesville. Why I chose UVa: I chose UVa specifically when I saw Charlottesville and felt it was an incredible town, and the academics were top notch. It's a really neat area to spend four years. What I like the most about running: The opportunity to find where your limit is and how good you can be. The highlight of my UVa athletic career: The ACC Championships the last outdoor season. I didn't know how good shape I was in and placed high in the steeplechase. The most important thing I've learned from track & field and cross country is: To be patient, trust the training and let the work that's taking place do its job. Be patient and consistent. My dream vacation would be: Switzerland during the summer. My post-college ambition is: Long term I would like to retire to a mountain town and coach track and cross country. I would like to coach high school-age kids. — Mike Scandura
