On June 7 at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Notre Dame
sophomore Yared Nuguse put forth an amazing kick in the final 250 meters to
edge Michigan State's Justine Kiprotich by 0.003 seconds at the finish line to win
the 1,500-meter race.
The Louisville, Ky., native — who earlier this year was the anchor leg for a Fight-
ing Irish quartet that won the NCAA indoor title in the distance medley relay —
won the outdoor national title with a perfectly timed lean at the finish. Nuguse,
who was tabbed as the ACC Men's Track Athlete of the Year, became the first
Fighting Irish man to capture an individual national title at the NCAA Outdoor
Championships since the late Ryan Shay won the 10,000-meter race in 2001.
