AUGUST 2019 THE WOLVERINE 5   FROM OUR READERS FROM OUR WEBSITE On head coach Jim Harbaugh saying that the plan is for both senior quarterback Shea Patterson and redshirt sophomore counterpart Dylan McCaffrey to play under center in every game this fall … • I never understood letting both QBs play, just like RBs getting pulled after one or two carries. — Swedgin • It can work. If one guy gets on fire you have to ride him. — 3rd&biakabutuka • I'm tired of breaking in new QBs. Being a good, expe- rienced QB goes a long way. Patterson will get the most playing time this year, unless he gets hurt. But we need to get Dylan and [redshirt freshman] Joe [Milton] some major playing time. — j_neutron • We need two capable QBs ready to go. We don't want a repeat of 2017. Love the idea. — jervaughn1 • This is a critical year for Harbaugh (can't go 0-5 against OSU), so I'll trust him on this. I've long wanted Harbaugh to be more aggressive about getting meaningful reps to his backup so we aren't as vul- nerable to injury and our next QB is ready to take over, so I'm happy to hear this. Ohio State has had backups come into two Michigan games due to injury and absolutely light it up. My only concern is I don't want a Drew Henson/Tom Brady situation. Patterson is the starter with McCaffrey get- ting meaningful playing time until shown differently. If we get up, I'd like to see Milton if he deserves it. — klemaster • Honestly, with the transfers of QBs, I think Harbaugh may be setting the new norm for college football QBs. This gives hope of playing time and development to the No. 2 and 3 guys. — tjaracz1 • I think that is definitely part of the thinking process. And with 2020 and 2021 QBs already committed, sending a sign that competition is open and you will play if you prove you deserve it. — elway4u2nv • Bad idea if he expects to rotate them throughout the game. That never works, as has been demonstrated many times, in college and in the pros. Pretty soon the team is split down the middle by differences of opinion on which guy should be playing. But if by this he means McCaffrey will come in late in games with M leading big, that's another story all together. — Number_Two_Fan • Not buying it one bit. I've heard this hundreds of times from coaches at every level. They only do it in games where they know they'll win big. — Sabazeed0420 • This is an awesome problem to have. I like this problem. — brucestef • This is awesome — I really want to see McCaffrey play more. I think he's the real deal. — MIV • I don't think this means they're both going to play half the game. I think it either means McCaffrey gets a series here or there, or Harbaugh is setting the stage for McCaffrey to be the guy! Remember, Jim said as of now that's the plan. — Robe63 • This is just smart. Keep both guys engaged and game ready in case of an injury. Also makes opponents prepare for both. Dylan can flat-out fly so why not have that tool in the tool- box? — ruidoso • Lots of things are said before the season starts. I'll believe it when I see it. — jimUMfan Join The Conversation - 60 Day Free Trial, Use Code BLUE60 ing about. U-M should broaden the fo- cus. Explore the challenges the peoples of the Americas are confronting in their effort to build democracy. Cuba is a remarkable chapter in this unfolding drama. One approach might involve traveling to Spain to learn about the Spanish Civil War and the Lincoln Bri- gade, which was comprised of many Americans. Then stop in Miami to see, with new eyes, the world that people who de- scend from Cuba and elsewhere are building. The future of Miami plays out to a significant degree against the historic backdrop of Cuba. Use the opportunity to travel to teach student-athletes about the mean- ing of democracy, not playing nice with the abuse of power. I bleed maize and blue. I am an Ann Arbor native, and I graduated from U-M. I was a student-athlete at Michi- gan, earning a varsity letter in swim- ming and training with the legendary coach Jon Urbanchek. I also teach political science at Hus- ton-Tillotson University, in Austin, so I appreciate U-M's commitment to col- lege athletics. Austin is a town where people are as crazy about their college football, i.e., the Longhorns, as people are in Ann Arbor. Huston-Tillotson also has a great tradition of athletics that adds greatly to the experience of our students, staff, faculty and sur- rounding community. Here is a terrific fact about HT from the world of college sports: the his- toric baseball field in Austin where American Negro Leagues baseball teams played is where our baseball team plays today. Huston-Tillotson is an American historically black college and university (HBCU). We are Aus- tin's oldest institution of higher educa- tion, preceding the University of Texas. The way U-M is combining travel and college sports to promote student learning is excellent. Now add democ- racy to the curriculum. Discuss the challenges and opportunities of life in an open society and the confidence and skills young people need as they connect with others to build a world around them. Keep up the good work! My best, and Go Blue! Dr. Robert M. Ceresa, Ph.D Austin, Texas
