say the least. He checked in at 217 pounds, ran a reported 4.48-second 40-yard dash and was impressive in the bench press and on several pro agility drills. His 40-yard time was better than that of Zwinak (4.6) and Belton (4.55). Lynch has impressive size, along with big-play potential. In high school he was voted the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of New York after rushing for more than 2,200 yards and 32 touchdowns at St. Francis High School in Athol Springs. With the emergence of Lynch in spring practice, the Nittany Lions backfield will boast a strong threeman rotation. On the offensive line, sophomore Angelo Mangiro and senior Garry Gilliam, in my opinion, need to win the starting center and right tackle positions, respectively. Mangiro will battle redshirt freshman Wendy Laurent and fifth-year senior Ty Howle to replace Stankiewitch. If Mangiro secures the starting spot, Howle can move over to left guard and challenge redshirt junior Miles Dieffenbach for that position. The addition of Gilliam at right tackle gives Penn State excellent depth at the position. Hes joining fifth-year seniors Adam Gress and Eric Shrive in the competition to replace Mike Farrell. Gilliams presence at offensive tackle could also bring versatility to the offense, particularly in the red zone. In Allen Robinson and Brandon Moseby-Felder, Penn State has two wide receivers who combined to make 108 receptions for 1,450 yards and 12 touchdowns a season ago. If redshirt freshman Eugene Lewis emerges as the third starting wide receiver, I believe the Nittany Lions could have one of the top two wideout units in the Big Ten this coming fall. Wide receivers coach Stan Hixon has said that Lewis could be the best pure athlete on the Nittany Lions roster at wide receiver. With the departure of Mauti and Hodges, redshirt freshman linebackers Nyeem Wartman and Gary Wooten will team with redshirt sophomore Ben Kline and redshirt junior Mike Hull in the competition for the vacant starting positions. Wartman is expected to battle Kline for Mautis starting Sam outside linebacker position, and Wooten has a good chance to emerge as Hulls backup at Will outside linebacker. Hull has 4.55-second 40-yard speed and benches 405 pounds, the best on the team. In the secondary, redshirt freshmen Jake Kiley and Malik Golden need to step up at safety, while sophomore DaQuan Davis is poised to take over Morriss field cornerback position. Goldens move to safety from wide receiver is not yet set in stone, but it appears that he will at least be tried out on defense during spring practice due to a lack of depth behind senior safeties Stephen Obeng-Agyapong and Malcolm Willis. The player on defense who may be the hardest to replace is Hill at the three-technique defensive tackle position. It appears the most likely candidate to succeed him is redshirt freshman Austin Johnson. Both Larry Johnson and OBrien have been singing Johnsons praises since the end of the 2012 season. Johnson stands 6-4, 302 pounds and reportedly is the best pure athlete on the roster at either defensive tackle position. Johnson will battle redshirt junior Kyle Baublitz to replace Hill. But dont dismiss the possibility of Baublitz and Johnson alternating at the three-technique position this fall. Penn State will also need to see continued development from defensive ends Deion Barnes, Anthony Zettel and C.J. Olaniyan. They certainly arent new faces Barnes and Zettel are sophomores, while Olaniyan is a junior but their improvement will be critical if Penn State hopes to have a consistent outside pass rush this fall. No one said this list would be short. The road to matching, or bettering, Penn States performance in 2012 certainly wont be easy. the two best barbecue restaurants have combined forces to meet all of your game day tailgating needs!
