ty has demonstrated something else entirely. Had the Nittany Lions lost to Michigan, Chambers effect on the Penn State program would not have been diminished. The reality is that regardless of hard work, effort or desire, theres no guarantee that good things will happen to good people. In sports, even at the college level, wins and losses are often the only yardstick by which success is measured. Winning is an important indicator of a programs overall health, to be sure, but victories are a byproduct of attitude. The program that Chambers inherited was accustomed to failure and had adopted an oh-well mentality. Hes been trying to change that mindset, and his work has barely begun. The dream of a Penn State mens basketball program that is strong enough to win consistently in the Big Ten remains just that a dream. But less than two years into the job, Chambers relentless positivity and penchant for hard work are rubbing off on those around him. After Fraziers injury, he told his players to know your role, do your job, trust your teammates, play hard. The sky is not falling, he said. The season is not over. I mean, thats how I feel. You walk around here and its like its going to be OK! Were going to go out there, were going to compete, were going to play 40 minutes, and youre going to be proud of the way we play. The mentality needs to change. It really does. Its been like this for a year. Lets go! Its time to compete! Its time to play hard! Its time to be Penn Staters and be proud of it! So forget the victory over Michigan. Forget the 14-game losing streak that preceded it. In getting people to buy into his positive philosophy, Chambers has already achieved a far bigger win than the one over the Wolverines. And now maybe others will begin to take notice.
