SEPTEMBER 2019 ■ 99 ■ PACK PROS Trea Turner On Fire Since Returning From Injury Trea Turner has been the most visible former NC State baseball player in the major leagues for a while now. But over the past two years, his accomplishments have gone way past making him the Wolf- pack's best big leaguer. Now, he's even doing things few have ever done before and setting himself up to make league history. The Washington Post's Jesse Dough- erty wrote on July 24 that "a high-ranking member of the Washington Nationals" had recently mentioned the team's season had been "suddenly saved" by its recent string of victories. After it was suggested, "flippantly" per the author, that Nats pitcher Max Scherzer may be a league MVP candidate for what he did in June and early July, the thought was cut off with not-so-joking idea from the executive: "How could he be when Trea Turner is the MVP of this team?" The 26-year-old shortstop furthered his profile July 23 by hitting for the cycle in an 11-1 win over the Colorado Rockies. That made him the 26th player in MLB annals to hit for the cycle multiple times (follow- ing the first time on April 25, 2017, also against Colorado).
