M . | S E P T . 1 3 | R E C H A L L | ? ? ? ? ? Penn State made two trips to Maples Pavilion last year, and both ended in disap- pointment. The Nittany Lions were swept by Stanford in the Big Ten/Pac-12 Chal- lenge in September, then returned in December for an NCAA regional and fell to the hosts, 3-1, coming up one win short of the Final Four. The two perennial powers are set to meet again next month, and this time it's the Cardinal who will be venturing into hostile territory. Rec Hall will surely be rocking for a nonconference showdown between two programs that have won a combined total of 15 national championships. The most recent of those titles was claimed last year by the Cardinal, who outlasted Nebraska in the NCAA championship match. Led by senior outside hitter Kathryn Plummer, the AVCA National Player of the Year the past two seasons, they're strong contenders for a return trip to the Final Four this year. Penn State is one of the few opponents that have given them trouble. Despite last year's two losses, the Nittany Lions lead the all-time series against Stanford, 12-11, and have won two of the three matches that have been played at Rec Hall. Nothing would please Russ Rose's team more than to make it three of four. –M.H. SCORECARD 2016 season. Penn State also defeated then-No. 48 VCU for its :rst victory over a ranked opponent since 2015. Prior to her arrival at Penn State, Anghelescu played and coached at two Atlantic Coast Conference institutions. She served as a volunteer assistant coach at North Carolina during the 2017-18 season and helped the Tar Heels win the ITA national indoor championship and the 2018 ACC tour- nament and earn the nation's No. 1 ranking for 10 consecutive weeks. North Carolina :nished the season with :ve All-Americans, had :ve play- ers take part in the NCAA individual championships and had a doubles squad advance to the NCAA semi:nals. Prior to joining the Tar Heels' sta;, Anghelescu served as a certi:ed ten- nis professional working with junior players of all levels at Life Time Fit- ness in Alpharetta, Ga., in addition to serving as a 2018 USTA National Spring Team Championships coach. She also worked with the USTA Southern Section High Performance Camp as a selected coach. Anghelescu spent her collegiate playing days at Georgia and Georgia Tech. A native of John's Creek, Ga., Anghelescu reached a high ranking of No. 935 as a professional on the WTA Tour in singles action and No. 957 in WTA doubles.
