www.BLUEANDGOLD.com SEPT. 23, 2019 15 UNDER THE DOME 65 Years Ago: Sept. 25, 1954 The head coaching debut of 26-year-old Terry Brennan results in a 21-0 victory by the No. 2-ranked Fighting Irish versus No. 4 Texas in Notre Dame Stadium — which in turns moves them to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. A starting halfback on the 1946-48 Notre Dame teams that never lost a game, Brennan's Irish are paced by the all-around play of quarterback Ralph Guglielmi in the era of one-platoon football. Gug- lielmi intercepts a school record three passes, with the first returned 42 yards to set up his 19-yard touchdown pass to co-captain Dan Shannon. Guglielmi finishes 6-of-10 passing for 125 yards and adds 26 rushing yards, tallying on three-yard runs for the last two Notre Dame touchdowns. 60 Years Ago: Sept. 26, 1959 Five years after Brennan's inaugural game, successor Joe Kuharich, a 1938 Notre Dame graduate who started at right guard in 1936-37, opens his era with a 28-8 victory at home versus North Carolina. It is the first Notre Dame opener played in the rain since 1927, and the Fighting Irish overcome 120 yards in penalties by limiting the Tar Heels to 160 total yards total offense. Halfback Jim Crotty leads the offense with three- and 19-yard scoring runs. Kuharich puts his own stamp on the program when Notre Dame dons blue jerseys with gold shoulder stripes. Throughout the Frank Leahy and Brennan eras dating back to 1941, Notre Dame had worn green jerseys. 55 Years Ago: Sept. 26, 1964 Just like five years earlier, another new coaching regime at Notre Dame opens amidst pouring rain and whipping wind, this time in Madison, Wis. Following a 2-7 record in 1963 (and 34-45 overall since 1956), the Fighting Irish under 41-year-old Ara Parseghian post a 31-7 victory versus Wisconsin and move up to No. 9 in the AP poll (which from 1962-68 ranked only a top 10). Senior split end Jack Snow sets a single-game school record with 217 receiving yards on nine catches, highlighted by 61- and 42-yard touchdown passes from classmate John Huarte, who completes 15 of his 24 passes for 270 yards. A year earlier, no Notre Dame quarterback totaled more than 251 passing yards the entire nine-game season, while only one receiver finished with more than six catches (Jim Kelly with 18 for 264 yards). On defense, another Notre Dame school record is set when the Badgers finish with minus-51 rushing yards (still the standard), while converted quarterback Tony Carey intercepts two passes. 10 Years Ago: Sept. 26, 2009 Hobbled by turf toe that sidelines him a good portion of the second half, junior quarterback Jimmy Clausen is re-inserted with Notre Dame trailing at Purdue 21-17 and receiving possession at its 28-yard line with 3:41 left in the contest. Clausen completes 6 of 9 passes for 70 yards, the final two yards to junior tight end Kyle Rudolph on fourth-and-goal with 24.8 seconds remaining in the 24-21 victory. Five Years Ago: Sept. 27, 2014 Notre Dame senior Everett Golson over- comes and compensates for four personal turnovers (two interceptions and two fum- bles) by completing a school-record 25 con- secutive passes — one short of tying the Foot- ball Bowl Subdivision record —during a 31-15 victory versus Syracuse at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. Golson finishes 32-of-39 passing for 362 yards with a career-high four touchdowns, two to Will Fuller (23 and 72 yards), and one apiece to Corey Robinson (eight yards) and Torii Hunter Jr. (13 yards), the latter for the 25th straight completion. The previous school record had been 14, shared by Tommy Rees (2011), Brady Quinn (2006 Fiesta Bowl) and Ron Powlus (1997) — the latter two in defeats. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Sept. 23-29 Senior quarterback Everett Golson completed a school-record 25 consecutive throws en route to 362 passing yards and a career-best four touchdown tosses in Notre Dame's 31-15 win over Syracuse in September 2014.
