18 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2019 BY JOHN BORTON J im Harbaugh's Wolverines set a record before they ever kicked off the 2019 season. Never before has a Michigan team featured five captains, includ- ing designated alternates. That's how they line up this year. Senior left guard Ben Bredeson became a two-time captain in an August team vote, joined by senior viper Khaleke Hudson and senior defensive tackle Carlo Kemp. This year's twist on team leaders involved Harbaugh naming a pair of "alter- nate captains," senior quarterback Shea Patterson and senior safety Josh Metellus. "Those five guys that the play- ers voted, they're the guys," Har- baugh said. "There are some others that are really good leaders, but to a man, Khaleke Hudson is arguably the leader of the team, Ben Bredeson is arguably the leader of the team. Same with Carlo Kemp, same with Shea Patterson, same with Josh Me- tellus. "All five of those guys are really looked up to on the team. When they talk, people listen. They're followed, and they set a great example." They're also playing crucial roles on the field in a season accompanied by substantial expectations. Here's a look at those tabbed as the team spokesmen. THE TOP TRIO Bredeson became only the 13th dif- ferent player to be named a multi- ple-time team captain in the history of Michigan football, and the first since linebacker Jake Ryan (2013-14). A four-year starter, Bredeson has earned the respect of teammates on both sides of the football, including Kemp, a fellow captain. FEARSOME FIVE Michigan Captains Lead In Many Ways Michigan elected a trio of permanent captains — viper Khaleke Hudson (No. 7), defensive tackle Carlo Kemp (No. 2) and guard Ben Bredeson (No. 74) — along with a pair of alternates in safety Josh Metellus (No. 14) and quarterback Shea Patterson (not pictured).
