4 THE WOLVERINE OCTOBER 2019 GOODBYE TO OUR FRIEND Dear The Wolverine, The first thing I look for in a hard copy of The Wolverine is a letter from J. Richard Jaconette, M.D. There it was yesterday when I opened the September issue. And what a letter it was, to get the football season off to a proper start. But the letter was followed by a notice that Dr. Jaconette had passed away, in early August. The Wolverine included excerpts from the eulogy by his son. This included the following: "He sometimes threw in that he was a member of the Med School Class of 1959 because, as he told me, they're more likely to think that I know what I'm talking about if they know that I'm older." Dr. Jaconette's memories, insights and gently implied recommenda- tions always evoked thought and quite often memories of one's own. Perhaps what will be most missed are his enthusiasm and loyalty for all things Blue. I am member of the Med School Class of 1950, and I know what I'm talking about. Arthur J. Some of the comments of him being overrated surprise me. The offense really has put a lot of stress on the defense since he's been here. Also, I can't think of anyone else out there in the coaching ranks that could be better. The "great" defensive coor- dinators at Clemson and LSU get lit up on occasion. Today's game and the way penalties are called need offenses to take over games. If the offense can't take a game over it better protect the ball. curly156 • Brown really gave insight into his defense and his thinking [when he met with the media Sept. 9]. You can't listen to him and not be optimistic, even if cautiously. His pushback on our defensive line versus Wisconsin being an issue was most noteworthy. I have those doubts about our undersized guys versus Wisconsin's cheese eaters. The defensive line is being challenged. No lack of motivation. sane1 • I'm surprised there's been so much angst about the defense. The ship is going to sink or float based on what the offense can and can't do. dlevs01 • The defense is more than fine. Biggest issue is health at this point. They 've given up points on shor t fields after fumbles. They'll shut down Wisconsin, and everyone will come around. BigTenDefender • Pretty safe to say it's going to be a lot harder to run the ball in the Big Ten than against Army or MTSU. Better pick up the passing game quick. Maize80 • The fumbles are the biggest prob- lem this offense has, as far as I'm con- cerned. Without them, MTSU scores maybe a touchdown, if that, Army might not have scored at all, and the offense actually gets to show "speed in space." Clean that up, you clean the offense up. Tempus1225 • There have to be consequences for these mistakes. If a player fumbles the ball after all this talk, that player should sit. Love the way Doug Skene phrased it in TheWolverine.com Podcast with Chris Balas — coaches need to make it clear that playing time will be lost if players are careless with the ball.
