OCTOBER 2019 THE WOLVERINE 37   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL 14 bye week seemed to come at the right time, giving the senior and oth- ers time to lick their wounds before facing a tough Wisconsin team on the road. "That had no effect — and I hope it had no effect — on his decision-mak- ing from that standpoint," Gattis said. "Every read-run from a quarterback standpoint isn't always going to be declared a pull. It's numbers … an- gles. How tight is the defender? How wide is the defender? Are there two [defenders] off the back-side edge? "There are a lot of things that go into play here. Nothing's by design. Everything we do has some level of a read, whether it's a [run-pass] read or a quarterback-read run. It's a little bit complex when you look at it, as far as the reads go. You have to decide how they're playing." Ball security was as big a concern with Patterson as his injury through two games. Though not both his fault, he fumbled twice in the win over Army — two critical miscues, including one on the opening drive that changed the tenor of the game for the second straight week — and needs to be better with the ball. "Ball security with the quarter- backs continues to be an emphasis," Harbaugh confirmed into the lead up to the Wisconsin contest. They're hopeful Patterson will be closer to 100 percent, too, to give him one less thing to think about with games against some of the more physical teams on the schedule ap- proaching. — Chris Balas KICKER ROTATION CONTINUES Michigan head coach Jim Har- baugh had a tough decision to make between sophomore Jake Moody and redshirt junior Quinn Nordin this fall. Both kickers had performed at such a high level that the coach wasn't certain which way to go. Instead of choosing one, he de- cided to let the competition continue into the season. "All through training camp, the kickers were practically dead even," Harbaugh said. "They were like one kick apart, one made field goal apart, with the same amount of attempts — over 50 attempts. "We decided they were dead even, and the plan was [in the opener], and I think it will be going forward … the plan was the kicker that was one kick ahead was Jake Moody. He would kick the first field goal, and then we would rotate every field goal between the two kickers, Jake then Quinn." Moody, though, got to kick both field goals against MTSU because of one stipulation — Nordin had kicked three extra points in between attempts. "I threw one little caveat in there that if it was the field goal kicker 's turn to kick the field goal on that OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Cl. WR 9 D.
